We run a cash football pool out of my bar strictly for the inner circle. Last year we paid out almost $6,000 at our awards party. It consists of 12 teams of two people each. The vast majority of the teams are made up of two guys, the majority of which played football in high school. Of course that makes them experts. (it does me anyway)
There are only 3 females in the pool. One is on the husband & wife team. The other two are The Gray Mares. The Gray Mares team consists of The Baboo and Miss Edna (my 80 yr old mother)

The Gray Mares are the ONLY team to cash each and every year (this is the 6th year) since we began doing the pool. They have already won a four week session (we have four of those) and just moved back into third place for the overall season payouts. The session win will be good for 7% of the total prize pool (between $340-400) and that third place will be good for 10% (between $500-600).

It just breaks the spirit of all the the men-only teams to have these two women beat us year in and year out. All this info was just to confirm that women can indeed know just as much football as the guys. They went 8-2 against the spread this past week.

The only time my husband bought me into his practice's basketball pool, I won it. Second place was a husband of one of the female doctors. I think that says more about doctors not being able to spend time following basketball than my ability...

I think the Gray Mares success stems from them taking advantage of the obvious. While a lot of the guys in our pool will factor in weather, injuries, what happened between two teams last year, ect, ect; the Gray Mares will say : Well heck, of course LSU is better than Mississippi State. Let's take LSU. It seems to work for them.
