What IS "nihil obstat"? I can usually figure most of the abbreviations, etc. out, but this one has me undone. Can someone please enlighten me?
Thanks!

Literally it stands for "nothing obstructs". It's a phrase used by the Roman
Catholic Church to show that there's nothing in a particular book that would
challenge the doctrines/dogmas of the church. It's often found in theological
works and is a sort of "stamp of approval".

And he's a Marketing VP in the music industry! Well, it's certainly nice to
know that the contestants aren't all actors and models this season!
As ear said earlier today, Nihil Obstat.
It's a phrase meaning "nothing hinders" that the Catholic Church uses as a first step in issuing an Imprimatur.Winnamill wrote:What IS "nihil obstat"? I can usually figure most of the abbreviations, etc. out, but this one has me undone. Can someone please enlighten me?

Possibly because it could be construed as an unnecessary showing-off of one's great intellect and an egotistical expression of superiority that no one is particularly interested in, possibly because it only solidifies the poster's classification as having an enormously swelled head.MarleysGh0st wrote:The phrase has had its critics.Winnamill wrote:What IS "nihil obstat"? That is precisely the reason why it was criticized. It was not intended as such - it was a shorthand as Marley indicated. But I can see where it could be construed as a display of intellectual arrogance.clem21 wrote:Possibly because it could be construed as an unnecessary showing-off of one's great intellect and an egotistical expression of superiority that no one is particularly interested in, possibly because it only solidifies the poster's classification as having an enormously swelled head.MarleysGh0st wrote:The phrase has had its critics.Winnamill wrote:What IS "nihil obstat"? Otherwise known as something I might say.
I'm just theorizing here...
Yes, I am not a fan. Everyone is all "nihil obstat" and it's easy to say sitting at home, watching on tv or reading a transcript....to me, it's just as insulting as when everyone on syndie bam is made out to be a bumbling idiot who was chosen simply because they couldn't possibly get to a million, thereby saving the show lots of money...clem21 wrote:Possibly because it could be construed as an unnecessary showing-off of one's great intellect and an egotistical expression of superiority that no one is particularly interested in, possibly because it only solidifies the poster's classification as having an enormously swelled head.MarleysGh0st wrote:The phrase has had its critics.Winnamill wrote:What IS "nihil obstat"? Feel free to blame me for the introduction of this phrase. As noted in a previous post it was not my intention to sound arrogantly intellectual. Nor would I ever insult anyone from CindyBAM as being a "bumbling idiot who was chosen simply because they couldn't possibly get to a million". Having been on the show I know what the Hot Seat can do to a person's brain (especially when TDC® is factored in).sunflower wrote:Yes, I am not a fan.
