QOD Sunday 12/9 "WHERE SHORT SHORTS HAPPENED"

As a note: Sorry for the lateness, I had to leave early this morning and, what with travel time and all, barely got home in time to set my fantasy lineup.

For those who read my sad tale in the Vh1 thread, you can blame Mother Nature for this one. Since I had to stay home and watch the game on tv, I spent the time finishing up a basketball QOD. Ha!

WHERE SHORT SHORTS HAPPENED

1. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, this band gave financial help to the 1992 Lithuanian basketball team so they could participate in the Olympics. The team won the bronze medal and honoured their sponsor with their uniforms. What is the name of this band?

2. Chris Ford was a member of what team when he made the NBA’s first three point shot in 1979?

3. This guard, known as Mr. Clutch, is the player silhouetted in the NBA logo and was named one of the 50 greatest basketball players of all time.

4. Led by Clyde the Glide Drexler and Akeem the Dream Olajuwan, which university’s men’s basketball team was nicknamed Phi Slamma Jamma?

5. I love Rick Barry for many things. For living in Colorado Springs, for siring Jon Barry, but, most of all, I love him for his granny shot. What is a granny shot?

QOD: When David Thompson and Monte Towe were together at North Carolina State, dunking was not allowed. Taking advantage of Towe’s diminutive stature and Thompson’s jumping ability, they originated one of basketball’s most popular moves, which they later reprised as Denver Nugget teammates. You know it, you love it, Marv Albert thinks it’s fun to say, what move is it?

(Please don't overthink this and then knock yourself out trying to disprove it. I'm sure that at sometime in the history of the world, a basketball did this before the 70's and two people were present at the time. But they are credited with 'inventing' the move as it is today with a name and everything. And my source is David Thompson himself.)

5 Point Bonus: What was David Thompson’s nickname (a 1970’s movie reference inspired by his incredible hang time leaps)?

5 Point Bonus Bonus: Before David Thompson took his (now retired) number 33, he had a number (destined to be retired itself) that now belongs to what current Denver Nugget?

1. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, this band gave financial help to the 1992 Lithuanian basketball team so they could participate in the Olympics. The team won the bronze medal and honoured their sponsor with their uniforms. What is the name of this band?

Grateful Dead? I remember the tie dye. Unless it was Phish, but I'll stick with The Dead

2. Chris Ford was a member of what team when he made the NBA’s first three point shot in 1979?

Nopers

3. This guard, known as Mr. Clutch, is the player silhouetted in the NBA logo and was named one of the 50 greatest basketball players of all time.

Jerry West. Rumor has it the MLB logo is Harmon Killebrew, but TPTB say it's no one in particular.

4. Led by Clyde the Glide Drexler and Akeem the Dream Olajuwan, which university’s men’s basketball team was nicknamed Phi Slamma Jamma?

Houston. University thereof.

5. I love Rick Barry for many things. For living in Colorado Springs, for siring Jon Barry, but, most of all, I love him for his granny shot. What is a granny shot?

My kinda shot! Bend your knees in a plie kinda way, but gracefulness is optional. Put both hands under the ball and scoop it upwards, underhanded, while straightening your knees for extra power. At least, that's how I do it. YMMV.

This is the double or nothing one, huh? Ain't gonna touch it, but I have an idea...

5 Point Bonus: What was David Thompson’s nickname (a 1970’s movie reference inspired by his incredible hang time leaps)?

Skywalker? (No penalty for WAGs here!)

5 Point Bonus Bonus: Before David Thompson took his (now retired) number 33, he had a number (destined to be retired itself) that now belongs to what current Denver Nugget?
I wouldn't know a current NBA player if he fell on me....

I may not know many answers today. Home School High School didn't have a basketball team. Or, if they did, my mom never drove me to a game. But, I will try, because that's the kind of girl I am.

1. The Grateful Dead, maybe? I remember seeing pictures of the tie-dyed shirts.
2. The Boston Celtics? (I did look up Mr. Larry Bird after yesterday's questions, but I don't remember seeing anything about Mr. Chris.)
3. Mr. Larry Bird. (He's the best NBA player I ever looked up.)
4. I do not know. I don't have a guess. I only know that Mr. Akeem's daughter Abi plays for the university in my town.
5. A granny shot must be what would happen if my mom played basketball, so maybe it's tossing the ball underhanded.

QoD -- I will not guess. I could, but I would guess wrong. So, I won't.

Bonus -- Air Bud. That's a famous movie.
Bonus bonus -- Mr. Carmello Anthony? (Mr. Nellie Lunatic told me once that Mr. Carmello plays for Denver.)

Bonus: Skywalker. I once saw him take something (a quarter?) off the top edge of a regulation backboard. Just amazing, especially since he was only (sic) about 6' 6".

BonusBonus: Don't know any Nuggets, since Calbert (my former student) moved on. He was a Nugget for a brief time, wasn't he? Didn't they wind up with Carmelo Anthony? I'll guess him.

Well, his N.C. State number was 44, but no Nugget has that number. I don't have the first clue what his old Nuggets number was, but judging by the clue "destined to be retired itself", it's either my boy Carmelo Anthony or my other boy Allen Iverson. Since 3 makes more sense than 15, I'll say Iverson.

2. Chris Ford was a member of what team when he made the NBA’s first three point shot in 1979?
Harlem Globetrotters...

3. This guard, known as Mr. Clutch, is the player silhouetted in the NBA logo and was named one of the 50 greatest basketball players of all time.
Jerry West

4. Led by Clyde the Glide Drexler and Akeem the Dream Olajuwan, which university’s men’s basketball team was nicknamed Phi Slamma Jamma?
U of Houston

5. I love Rick Barry for many things. For living in Colorado Springs, for siring Jon Barry, but, most of all, I love him for his granny shot. What is a granny shot?
A shot of pure grain alcohol drunk from the, umm, cleavage of granny...

I think I know it since I am doing fairly lousy anyway might as well roll the dice. The "alley oop".

Air Bud...

5 Point Bonus Bonus: Before David Thompson took his (now retired) number 33, he had a number (destined to be retired itself) that now belongs to what current Denver Nugget?
Yeah, right. Lessee, I know two Nuggets, Iverson and Anthony. I will guess Iverson since he seems to be more a sure thing for the hall of fame..
Between this and DoA its not likely to be strong weekend sine I am not much of a basketball fan. Not that I have been doing particularly well in either so far...

5. Underhanded shot (Barry shot FTs this way)

QOD: they used the alley-oop (not sure they originated it)

Bonus: "The Skywalker" or "Skywalker"

Bonus Bonus: You have confused me. How can a curretn Nugget wear a number that has been retired ("destined to be retired itself). He wore 44 at NC State, but no current Nugget wears that number, b/c it was retired for Dan Issel. Are you trying to predict that the Nuggets will retire Carmelo Anthony's number?
