Why am I here so late?

I am not making this up: I volunteered to babysit a cheesecake. Can't cool it too quickly or you get the cracking thing.
Thank goodness for the Tanqueray, vermouth and olives...

10:55 is late?
Enough martinis and you'll drop it!

If I did that, I'd be arrested the next day for cannibalism.

I don't care when mine crack. I see it as a sign of character.

See--I'm not the only nutcase who stays up too late to make sure things come out right (Marley ragged me about waiting for the dryer so the clothes didn't wrinkle.)
I made sure the foil didn't slip on the crust for my pumpkin pie, then cooled it ever so gradually in the oven with door closed, then open, and it turned out pretty enough to model it. No cracks, or burnt spots on the crust, and the middle didn't pull away from the edges.
Then we descended on that baby like a pack of wolverines the next day. Alas.

I wait by the dry for clothes, because I don't want to iron.
I just figure that if food tastes good, flaws are ok.

I take Do Not Iron to heart. I see it, and I'm good for about six years per viewing.
I prefer ugly food (I don't like waxy buildup on my fruits and veggies, and ugly oranges taste better than pretty ones) but I try to make baked good look pretty for holidays and bake sales. I think that's why I love to cook and hate to bake. My s-i-l is the opposite, so we work well together at the holidays. But she doesn't like pumpkin pie, and her daughter (the niece I torture in the grocery store by singing) and I need it in the vein. So I make it.
My niece made this German chocolate pie, and we about ditched the project to eat the topping out of the pot. But then we showed remarkable restraint by finishing the pie, and even waiting until it was (okay--ALMOST) cool to dig in.

I did not!
I merely suggested that it might be a fine time to get some sleep after midnight, while the dryer did its own work. When you replied that you had to wait for it to finish to avoid that wrinkling business, I made no reply at all.
Even if I would have chosen the wrinkles, myself.

Moms are judged if their kids have wrinkled clothes.

How'd the cheesecake turn out?

The funniest possible ending--cheesecake turned out great. Five minutes from my b-i-l's house--which is an hour away--Mrs. Buff and I realized at the same time:
We left it at home.
I am not making this up.

I think that is a great ending! I may have actually done the same thing. On purpose. And given a store-bought substitute.
I'm a Cheesecake Ho....

Yeah, well, then my kids are judged pretty harshly! They don't take particular care with their clothes, so I return the favor. Rain Man is the only one who consistently can find the laundry hamper, and it hasn't moved in 9 years....
These particular clothes were for my husband to travel. And I wasn't going to iron jeans.

You will enjoy the cheesecake immensely upon your return home.

I wish there were a forgotten cheescake in my kitchen right about now. But in a way it's a good thing there isn't.
It wouldn't stand a chance.

I have a hidden cache of dark chocolate caramels with sea salt on top.
Nobody has found them so far.

I've pulled the Frango Mints out of hiding. I take great pride in having introduced these little bits of heaven to both Snaxx and Uly during our Chicago adventure last fall.

Hooray that it was b-i-l's house and not your brother's house.
She will be blamed, not you!

Mental note: check out Frango mints and dark chocolate caramels with sea salt on top.
Always looking for new ways to thrill the taste buds.

You SoCal types get all the best food.
Around here, chocolate-covered cherries are luxury items.

That was one of my mother's favorite candies and we always got a box for her for Christmas. I'm rather partial to them also, although they seem to be a lot sweeter and less cherry-like these days.

Heck--I love Raisinettes! Who cares about gourmet when you're going to demolish them...
I only like the cordial cherries. And I don't eat the cherries. I don't like them much.
