Lyrically Speaking 12-7-07 - Scoring & Such

Thankfully it's the end of the week, I've got the weekend to recharge my batteries.
OK, we’ve got a little bit of everything today, some Top Ten hits (4 of them), a few that didn’t make the Top 40, and one that didn’t even chart! As far as I’m concerned it wasn’t a great year for the singles chart, but there were some great albums that year, and it’s reflected in today’s games…it’s 1991!
LS #5………………………………………….1991
Good Luck and Have Fun!
1. A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My Libido
Yay, a denial
2. Father, if Jesus exists,
Then how come he never lived here.
3. Not everyone in New York would pay to see Andrew Lloyd Webber
May his trousers fall down as he bows to the queen and the crown
I don't know what tune the orchestra played
But it went by me sickly sentimental
4. Something`s wrong
Shut the light
Heavy thoughts tonight
And they aren`t of Snow White
5. Now I'm fully grown
And I know where it's at
Somehow I stayed thin
While the other guys got fat
6. Every whisper
Of every waking hour I’m
Choosing my confessions
7. She calls my name,
Pulls my train
No one else could heal my pain
And I just can't contain
This feeling that remains
8. Johnny, take a dive with your sister in the rain
Let her talk about the things you can't explain.
To touch is to heal, to hurt is to steal.
If you want to kiss the sky, better learn how to kneel
On your knees, boy!
9. You know she's waiting
Just anticipating
For things that she'll never, never, never, never possess
10. His leather jacket had chains that would jingle
They both met movie stars, partied and mingled
Their A&R man said "I don't hear a single"
The future was wide open

Those last two lines are going to haunt me....

I agree, 1991 sucked....

Just answering to answer. 1991 was about the time my current music listening had pretty much evaporated and I started listening to the classic rock stations. Not that I did well on the 70's and 80's categories this week or anything.
None of these are even vaguely familiar (although I'm sure there will be at least two or three 'duh!'s when I see the answers) so taking time to see if something clicks will be a waste. I'm still laughing at the thought of mini steering her cart through the supermarket singing lines off of a piece of paper. Because I can see myself doing the same thing.
Damn, after reading littlebeast's answers, I can see I should have actually read the last two lines of the last song and I wouldn't have gotten a goose egg today. Do I get credit for knowing that Johnny Depp was in the video? Ha!
Edited to add spoiler comment

2. Father, if Jesus exists,
Then how come he never lived here.
Nope. Sounds like something I would hate, though. Navel-gazing music...
3. Not everyone in New York would pay to see Andrew Lloyd Webber
May his trousers fall down as he bows to the queen and the crown
I don't know what tune the orchestra played
But it went by me sickly sentimental
Whatever the name of the first song on Woodface is. By Crowded House. I've heard it 60 million times and don't know the title.
4. Something`s wrong
Shut the light
Heavy thoughts tonight
And they aren`t of Snow White
Something depressing, I'm sure.
5. Now I'm fully grown
And I know where it's at
Somehow I stayed thin
While the other guys got fat
No, but familiarish
6. Every whisper
Of every waking hour I’m
Choosing my confessions
If I miss this one....Losing My Religion, REM
7. She calls my name,
Pulls my train
No one else could heal my pain
And I just can't contain
This feeling that remains
There She Goes, some one-hit wonders. But cute song.
8. Johnny, take a dive with your sister in the rain
Let her talk about the things you can't explain.
To touch is to heal, to hurt is to steal.
If you want to kiss the sky, better learn how to kneel
On your knees, boy!
Mysterious Ways, U2

Luckily this was online shopping. But at Thanksgiving time my niece pretended not to be with me as I sang along to the supermarket music and sometimes sang karaoke into the can of Spaghetti-O's. I only danced when the aisles were empty. Actually, she was cracking up most of the time. She's as nuts as I am, but still that kind of self-conscious that plagues 17-year-olds.
My oldest son would have left and gone to sit in the car...

I guess I wasn't paying attention much when I was in high school...
1. A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My Libido
Yay, a denial
Nirvana- Smells Like Teen Spirit
2. Father, if Jesus exists,
Then how come he never lived here.
I got a rock...
3. Not everyone in New York would pay to see Andrew Lloyd Webber
May his trousers fall down as he bows to the queen and the crown
I don't know what tune the orchestra played
But it went by me sickly sentimental
Another rock, although this one is familiar...
4. Something`s wrong
Shut the light
Heavy thoughts tonight
And they aren`t of Snow White
Metallica. Enter Sandman. Otherwise known as, "the song that Metallica sold out with".
5. Now I'm fully grown
And I know where it's at
Somehow I stayed thin
While the other guys got fat
I'm thinking Sublime but I'm thinking I'm wrong.
6. Every whisper
Of every waking hour I’m
Choosing my confessions
REM- Losing My Religion
7. She calls my name,
Pulls my train
No one else could heal my pain
And I just can't contain
This feeling that remains
? I got nothing.
8. Johnny, take a dive with your sister in the rain
Let her talk about the things you can't explain.
To touch is to heal, to hurt is to steal.
If you want to kiss the sky, better learn how to kneel
On your knees, boy!
I think this might be Poe- Angry Johnny, but I also think it might not be.
9. You know she's waiting
Just anticipating
For things that she'll never, never, never, never possess
10. His leather jacket had chains that would jingle
They both met movie stars, partied and mingled

I got nothin'. Nothing even had we pause to see if I could hear a tune in my head. Nothing will nag at me. I guess that's a good way to score a big fat zero.

Indeed a quiet year. No clue on the lyrics noted here. But it was the eve of a revival for lyrics I might know, lead by the release of a major compilation the following year which included this little seasonal jewel.
Suntanned children sleeping
Hoping Santa will come true
Christmas morning marlin leaping
Oh it's papa's birthday

I see why I didn't know the title for #3. Besides my vagueness, I mean. I always skip over it. I don't really like it, and it hasn't aged well with the Tammy Faye Bakker references and all. So now I know it's Chocolate Cake. At least you used the opening lines so I'd know it was Crowded House, but you only count complete answers, so even that does me no good!
I never thought I'd say I didn't like chocolate cake!

6 Losing My Religion - REM
7 There She Goes - I think the Las were earlier than this, The Pixies

9 Try a little tenderness - The Commitments
10 nope

LS………………………………………….1991
1. A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My Libido
Yay, a denial
#6 Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana
The beginning of an era, this song started the “Grunge” thing and ended the “Hair-band” thing (thank God). I remember playing this 3 times in one night right after it came out, one of the bartenders started throwing ice cubes at me because he didn’t like the “noise”.
2. Father, if Jesus exists,
Then how come he never lived here.
#5 All This Time – Sting
I was surpised that only one person got this one, they still play the Hell out of it on the radio. It was after this came out that I gave up on Sting, he got very mellow and his albums never seemed to end. Still, a very good song.
3. Not everyone in New York would pay to see Andrew Lloyd Webber
May his trousers fall down as he bows to the queen and the crown
I don't know what tune the orchestra played
But it went by me sickly sentimental
DNC Chocolate Cake – Crowded House
Never even made it onto the chart, although the album did pretty well, I saw them over the summer in NYC, a very good show, and Woodface is a very good album.
4. Something`s wrong
Shut the light
Heavy thoughts tonight
And they aren`t of Snow White
#16 Enter Sandman – Metallica
I have never been a big fan of Metallica, and this song only gets inclusion for Mariano purposes.
5. Now I'm fully grown
And I know where it's at
Somehow I stayed thin
While the other guys got fat
#32 Rush – Big Audio Dynamite
No one got this, they play it on the radio like everyday, it’s even been in a few movies, my kids even know this song…it only made it to #32.
6. Every whisper
Of every waking hour I’m
Choosing my confessions
#4 Losing My Religion – R.E.M.
What can I say, I love R.E.M. and I love this song, possibly one of the top 100 singles of all-time. Great album too.
7. She calls my name,
Pulls my train
No one else could heal my pain
And I just can't contain
This feeling that remains
#49 There She Goes – La’s
I think only one person got this one correct. Great song, I’ve heard that supposed to be about Heroin, others argue the fact, doesn’t matter great tune. My one trip to see Letterman (NBC show) they were the musical guests, with Charles Grodin as the main guest. They tapped an audience reaction shot for a SNL show, I was in the first row, look for me, I’m wearing a white shirt.
8. Johnny, take a dive with your sister in the rain
Let her talk about the things you can't explain.
To touch is to heal, to hurt is to steal.
If you want to kiss the sky, better learn how to kneel
On your knees, boy!
# 9 Mysterious Ways – U2
U2 or R.E.M., it’s just like The Beatles & the Stones. This was a great album with a tremendous amount of hits on it. I happen to hear this one the day before I wrote this game.
9. You know she's waiting
Just anticipating
For things that she'll never, never, never, never possess
#67 Try a Little Tenderness – The Commitments
A really nice movie and a great date flick (unlike The Crying Game which came out about the same time). Andrew Strong could really sing, and it seemed like he was destined for stardom, but it never really happened. Otis Redding gives the best performance of this one, and Bing Crosby was one of the first people to record it back in the thirties. Second best recording of it is by Jack Webb, find it and many other “great” songs on Golden Throats, you won’t be disappointed.
10. His leather jacket had chains that would jingle
They both met movie stars, partied and mingled
Their A&R man said "I don't hear a single"
The future was wide open
#92 Into The Great Wide Open – Tom Petty
I can’t believe this song even charted, it must have something to do with Johnny Depp being in the video. I really like this song and the album was pretty good, not Full Moon Fever good, but pretty good nonetheless. I especially like the line
“Their A&R man said "I don't hear a single"”
