I realize this was taped not too long after the date, but seriously, how are you supposed to figure it out quickly? Unless like me and the PAF, you have a special day near it to which you can refer.

08/08/08 was the day of the Opening Ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics. Media made a big deal of how lucky the number 8 is in the Chinese culture.

Still, it takes a little leap to know that Opening Ceremonies are always on Fridays ....

This one was easy for me b/c I always have to tape the opening ceremonies because they are always shown after sundown on Friday nights which is after the Sabbath starts....

Yeesh. A contestant is supposed to remember the Chinese obsession with the lucky number '8' that led them to selecting that date for the opening ceremony, then remember that the opening ceremony was on a Friday, all in 30 seconds, without any hint in the clue about the Olympics, for $8,000?

WWOQ under the circumstances. Doubly so for the home viewers, now that all these months have passed.

There was a clock running at the time, Meredith, and Seth still had some time on it. It seems petty to throw away the time on that one and make him burn a couple seconds off the regular clock. Not that any contestants have reached the $1 million question, where banked time would make a difference, since The Damned Clock was added.

Any remaining time on the PAF clock is unimportant. In addition, no answer can be given unless the game clock is running. The only exception is for the first of the 2 responses on the DD - so Meredith couldn't take Seth's answer while he was still using the PAF lifeline. She needed to restart TDC before his answer could be accepted.

So make answering while the PAF clock is running a second exception. If TPTB are so enamoured with TDC, that makes more sense than giving contestants a few seconds of free time to state the first answer of their DD.

Or, better yet, get rid of TDC!

C: Friday ( 19)
What the Chinese?

I did not immediately associate this Q it with the Olympics although in retrospect that might have helped and perhaps at the time of taping I might have. Fortunately having the doomsday clock rules in my head it was easy to figure out once I remembered what day in 2008 was "doomsday". At the time of taping that would have been no problem since it was still 2008. I never can remember the formula for determining doomsday for any year and even if I had I am not sure I could have done it all with TDC looming.

I would say it is undervalued but this is CindyBAM so it is pretty typical at the 8-25K range.

I read about the Chinese obsession with 8 shortly before the Olympics, but that didn't figure into this, for me, at all. Being a regular viewer of NBC, however, I knew the answer immediately because they promoted the start of the Olympics being on 08/08/08 several times an hour for the previous 4-6 months. The ad either opened or closed (or both) with a graphic showing just the date, like many blockbuster movies do. I am also pretty sure that the Olympics typically open on Fridays and close on Sundays, 16 days later.

There was such a big deal made about the Olympics starting on 08/08/08. They do always start on Friday and close on Sunday. I thought that was pretty common knowledge.

OK. I knew I was missing something. How was this supposed to be calculated as an "easier" (8K) Q unless you are a savant who knows all the dates back to the year squat.

I guess if you are fortunate enough to know what day July the 4th fell on last year, you could do the calculation, but even if I had remembered that (all I could remember is that it wasn't in the middle of the week last year) I couldn't in the time available.

OK, so I peeked into this thread & saw the mention of "Olympics". Great. Meredith didn't even mention that, not on my set anyway.

That's what you get for fast-forwarding through commercials on "Lawn Order!" :)

This seems like a WWOQ - how would anyone know that off the top of his or her head? And given the time constraint in the HS it would be tough to figure out. I'd PAF also.
