Dave said during the break that he's extremely nervous, but Meredith says he's not showing it.

Dave is a kid at heart. He says he's 36 biologically, but he hasn't really advanced past the age of eight. He likes cartoons, comic books, video games. He's promised himself that, with the money he wins, he's going to build an arcade in the basement. Joel: Uh, 80%.

That was Joel's first guess.

-- Commercial Break --

Dave is wearing a good luck charm--a tiki necklace he got surfing in Florida at sixteen; it's pretty much never left his neck since then, except for changing the nasty straps.

Bill: June 30 is not Sputnik. 1958 could have been Alaska; it was about that time. Tonight Show was before that. McDonald's opens for business, I think was in the 1960s, so I'm going to go Senate approves Alaskan statehood, by the process of elimination, Dave.

Dave: Thanks, Bill!

Bill: If I were sitting where you are, that's what I would do. So--

Dave: Thanks, Bill!

With 30 seconds left, Dave decides to Double Dip.

Dave's first answer is

Answer
D: Senate approves Alaskan statehood ( 30 )
That question is just nasty for the dollar level. The year that one would generally associate with Alaskan statehood is 1959. Who TF knows (or cares) when the House, or the Senate, approved it? Before I clicked on the spoiler for this question, my thought process was: could it have happened in 1958? Sure, but couldn't it have also happened in early 1959, since that's the year when statehood actually began?

The only one of the four choices that I knew was clearly wrong was Sputnik, because I knew that the launch was in 1957 -- a whopping one year before the date in this question.

McDonald's turns out to date back all the way to 1940 (as far as the opening of the McDonald bros.' first restaurant in San Bernardino, CA), or 1955 if you prefer to go by the inception of the modern McDonald's Corporation. And the Tonight Show first aired in 1954. Anyway, expecting contestants to distinguish between 1954, 1955, 1957, and 1958 (especially with the 1958 event much more popularly associated with 1959) is awfully picky for a $50,000 clue. I suspect that the comparable-tier questions in PTBAM in August will be much more straightforward.

OK so Dave taped at the beginning of the second half of the taping day two days before I did...

So if my math is right then I'm on track to be on about a week ahead of the date they gave me. Does anyone know if they're taking a week off in between or something? I'd love for my show to be moved up a week as it would mean I'd actually be able to watch my show....

Perhaps this got some press during the election last year? I don't recall hearing about it, but I don't recall a lot in general. Luckily, the expert was both old and confidents. I was surprised he didn't go to Mr. Nye for the Chomsky Q, but it worked out well as this would have been tough for a GPAF (or is it PAFoogler? PAG? )

I agree it is pretty tough at this level although not that unusual for this show. If you happen to know that Alaska became a state in January of '59 as I did (although I thought it was January 1st. Turns out it was the 3rd.) then that might make it easier to think Senate approval was in '58. The key is knowing the others and especially that Sputnik was '57. Most people with little real interest in trivia aren't likely to know that.

I would confidently have gone down in flames on this one when I confidently answered Sputnik. It would never have occurred to me in 30 seconds to differentiate between Senate approval and the year Alaska actually became a state. :(

Dave's first answer is
Spoiler
D: Senate approves Alaskan statehood.
Answer
D: Senate approves Alaskan statehood ( 30 )
McDonald's actually opened for business in 1955 (if you are counting from Ray Kroc's first restaurant - as a former employee of the company I knew that); Sputnik was launched in October 1957. I'm not sure about "The Tonight Show" but I think it was before 1958. Given that this year is the 50th anniversary of Alaskan statehood, it makes sense that 1958 would be the anniversary of the Senate's approval (I wonder when this episode was taped?). So I make D my final answer.

So I'd be going for $100K with all lifelines still available.

I was wondering if there was a requirement for a time period to elapse between Senate approval of statehood and the actual date of statehood; turns out that there is no hard and fast rule governing this.

And I swore for years that Alaska became a state in 1959, Hawaii in 1960, just because there was a time difference. Dang, what a question!

If "became a state" means that the Senate approved statehood, then Alaska became a state in 1958. However if you go by when they were actually added to the union, it's 1959. Since they are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, I guess they think it's 1959.

I knew this cold, but only because the newspaper that announced my birth had the news of the Alaska statehood vote as its headline on the front page.

I know that "The Tonight Show" debuted in the early 1950s, so that's wrong. I remember from watching several shows on Food Network that the first McDonald's also opened in the early 1950s, so that's wrong. B and D are both in the ballpark of 1958. I know Alaska actually became a state in 1959, but I never bothered to look up when exactly the Senate voted on its admission. Double Dip on B and D.
