Identify each one as Dead or Alive. Then take a guess on what the theme is for today. Today's theme can be described in one word, but is a little more exclusive than some of the past themes.

1. Stephen Ambrose
2. Daniel J. Boorstin
3. Frederick Jackson Turner
4. Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.
5. Gertrude Himmelfarb
6. Shelby Foote
7. Bruce Catton
8. Ariel Durant
9. Doris Kearns Goodwin
10. Thomas Cahill

I have the feeling I'm killing some important historical writers.
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

I know they are writers, but the few that I know seem to write on different subjects, so I will say they are Pulitzer winners.

I was shocked at how many of these folks had died very recently. Something about being an historian means you can't last long past the turn of a century, I guess.
