QOD Tuesday 12/04 "CHAPPY CHANUKKAH"
The weekend QODs are closed, but Monday is still open through tonight.
Chappy Chanukkah
Yeah, yeah, the Jewish among us will have a bit of an advantage on this one. But don't worry, Christians, you'll get yours in a couple of weeks.
1. What gold medal winning American athlete was removed from the Olympic Village and taken out of the country under heavy security after the terrorist attack on the Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics?
2. By the doorway of a Jewish home, you will usually find a small case that contains a piece of parchment on which the Shema has been written. What is this called?
3. How long does the period of mourning known as shiva last?
4. Chanukkah gets a lot of press because it's close to Christmas, but it's not a really important Jewish holiday like, say, Yom Kippur. One of my favourites is the festival that begins five days after Yom Kippur, when they build tents with corn husks on the lawn of the temple. What is this festival called?
5. Provide the last line of Rabbi Hillel's famous three questions: If I am not for myself, who is for me? When I am for myself, what am I? (Hebrew translations always vary, but not that I've ever seen on the third question.)
QOD: The Twelve Tribes of Israel were descended from the sons of Jacob. Not counting the House of Joseph, name three (and only three) of the sons who make up the remaining 11 tribes.
5 Point Bonus: Although I haven't done the necessary research for many years, I think that this may be the only kosher rotgut. Please give the full brand name or street name (either one, but it must be the full name either way) of this skid row wine made by a company whose name is derived from the Hebrew for a symbol of Judaism.

3. You're gonna have trouble with this one. Most people believe it's 7 days. But it aint. It's really 5 and a half days, but if the 6th day is Shabbat, it's 4 and a half days. On the "half day", the mourners are supposed to exit the shiva house, and walk in a circle (I guess indicating the "circle of life"). This act ends the shiva period.
4. Sukkot (and btw... it's a triple mitzvah to "do it" in the Sukkah)

I guessed on some of those.
I have never met Mr. Jacob or Mr. Joseph, so I don't know their boys. I don't know the wine answer, either. My mom won't let me drink wine or even eat raisins. She says I should get drunk on the joy of being alive. She's sappy that way.
I wish you would have asked about those little mesh bags of gelt. They smell like chocolate, and they are fun to throw in the air.

Suitguy is not bitter.
feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

1. What gold medal winning American athlete was removed from the Olympic Village and taken out of the country under heavy security after the terrorist attack on the Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics?
The Shema Box2. By the doorway of a Jewish home, you will usually find a small case that contains a piece of parchment on which the Shema has been written. What is this called?
3. How long does the period of mourning known as shiva last?
7 Days
Rosh Hoshanah4.
What am I, chopped liver?5. Provide the last line of Rabbi Hillel's famous three questions: If I am not for myself, who is for me? When I am for myself, what am I? (Hebrew translations always vary, but not that I've ever seen on the third question.)

Chappy Chanukkah
Yeah, yeah, the Jewish among us will have a bit of an advantage on this one. But don't worry, Christians, you'll get yours in a couple of weeks.

So, in the interest of fairness, equal opportunity and all that other nonsense there will also be a day for us heathens?

About the only name I can recall with confidence from that year is Mark Spitz.
2. By the doorway of a Jewish home, you will usually find a small case that contains a piece of parchment on which the Shema has been written. What is this called?
Oddly enough I know this one. I think. A Mezuzah? My father, who is about as jewish as I am, keeps one on his door frame. I have no idea why. I think he has a certain kinship with the persecution served by those of the Jewish faith as the ancestor of an excommunicated Irish priest. Or maybe it is just the Irish part, what do I know?
3. How long does the period of mourning known as shiva last?
I dunno. 24 hours?
