Not to split hairs or anything, but wasn't the Confederate States of America a "foreign" country after they seceded and formed their own government?

I guess I've been reading too much Turtledove (if such a thing is possible).

Well, yes actually. I recently picked up the first book in his juvenile series about historians who time-hop and mix in with the locals. Mom gets sick, parents head to home time, time machine gets broken and kids (16-17 year old brother, slightly younger sister) get stranded in ancient Italy. Nice history lesson and some interesting morality debates, but I didn't care about the characters terribly much. Also thought they were a bit too resourceful. I won't bother with the rest.

I read that one, too. Like you said, it is a juvenile series.

So how can Turtledove manage to write all those novels faster than I can read them?

I've gone through the latter. Good internal logic for the fantasy parts, and the characters were engaging. Fun to figure out which fighting nation had which real-life counterpart. Same for the people.

I think that history being written by the victors is key here. No doubt as far as the British were concerned the American Revolution was merely an internal dispute and had they won it would not be viewed as being fought between foreign countries.

Of course if they had it might have negated the rest of the options as well...
