Strange fumes cancel dance class

No dance points for me tonight. We were supposed to have an all-ages Irish class to rehearse for an upcoming performance. When the studio doors were opened, however, a pungent chemical odor was obvious. The smallest girls, aged about 6 to 8, started coughing almost immediately, followed by announcements from a couple of them that they had headaches. It seemed prudent to get everyone back outside as quickly as possible.
I have no idea what might have caused the smell, whether it could have been some kind of gas back-up from the sewer, an unusual kind of cleaner, or a chemical spill in the grooming parlor next door. I can't even describe what it smelled "like." Other than certainty it was not natural gas from a malfunctioning furnace, I have absolutely no frame of reference. I'm just happy not to be there.
