Should the word in the $500 question have been "salve"?

I've been to Newburgh. I don't consider that WE territory. That seems absolutely upstate.

Meredith pronounced it "solve". I've only heard "save" (rhymes with have). Whatever.

Quite a few NYC police and firefighters lived just as far out on Long Island, around where I lived when there, and make the long drive to the city. I think the city makes them be residents when they are hired, but afterwards they are free to move and some move a pretty long way. One cousin of mine moved a more reasonable distance from Queens to Seaford, then retired from the NYC PD and moved to Colorado.

Congrats on the brief face time. I suppose after seeing the question you were either relieved you weren't called or like "Darn I could have helped him."

Yep! I have no idea why people tolerate such long commutes.
I work with several people who drive here from Charlotte; that's 75 miles!

Moonie, I'm sorry you didn't even get a mention. Usually Meredith says "your friend or your brother or your boss" something like that. She didn't even mention your name. Bummer. How do you know Gig?

He's one of Moonie's patients. I'm still wondering whether Moonie would have known the answer. (I would not have.) --Bob

$25K: Never heard of a gypsy robe, though the word gypsy has me leaning toward circus clowns. Will Dana may know this, so I'll try him first. If he doesn't know it, I'll PAF.

Gypsies are chorus members. The robe is awarded on opening night to the most experienced one.

Andrei is one of my patients. A great guy, he taped this in October and has been waiting for the airdate ever since.
If he had called me, I would have leaned toward "Opera Singer", as I can picture one of those in a robe, for some reason. However, my 14yr old Jordan KNEW the correct answer, as she is a Broadway fanatic (and saw a reference to this while seeing "Legally Blonde". (Now, would I have trusted her answer in the heat of a phone call? That is the question!)
Im sorta bummed she didnt mention who the PAFs 'were'. (Warning, Delusion of Grandeur-alert) If she had said "Chiropractor", I wonder if she would have remembered me (why not, I had a whole 9 minutes on that show).

Okay, I'll buy that reasoning -- but it's still a llloooooonnnnnngggg drive.
The cost of living has been driving people further and further away from NYC, despite the outrageously long commute.
Also, Newburgh is still in the WABC viewing area, which has always been our more general definition for Where Else.

When I lived in Danbury, CT, you would have called me a WE (TM), I suppose.

Certainly!
Didn't you get the NYC TV channels, there? Didn't some of your neighbors commute to the city?
Where Else!

I'm curious to see if you think if Monticello, NY is WE territory? We do get the NY stations and we are 90 miles from NYC - although very few people commute from there (I always thought of Middletown to be the farthest point in our direction that had a significant number of commuters to NYC). Although I haven't lived there for over 25 years, I was there for a month when I tried out for BAM nearly a year ago.
BTW, Moonie - I see you are from Monroe - did you grow up there? I taught at Monroe-Woodbury H.S. for a year back in 1980-81 and was wondering if on some off chance we might have crossed paths? I also did a stint on their volunteer ambulance service.

Yes to both- but Danbury has a completely different character than New York and its surrounding burbs.
And how is this any different than most of the J! contestants coming from the LA area?
WE/WE- I can see you grumbling (TM) about.
The geographical WE on its own?
Not so much.

Hey, a definition is a definition, right?
Although, if we were to assign degrees of Where Elseness, Monticello would be much less WE than anyplace that can get to the studio using the subway.
The whole point of our mentioning Where Else, remember, is to highlight what a disproportionately large percentage of contestants come from this area--something that was not true back when they used the Phone Game. There's a big country out there, Elsewhere!
