Have you had success with downloading MP3's from a music site? I am looking for a site with a virtually unlimited catalogue where I can download MP3's for a small fee and which I can play on as many devices and as many times as I want with no expiration. If you know of such a site (an I know they're out there) please let me know. Thanks!

I have always downloaded music using iTunes. I find that if the music gets burned onto a CD, you can use the iTunes software to get it uploaded onto your computer in whatever format you need.

For instance, Maddie needed the song Elenore, by The Turtles for a Powerpoint presentation. We downloaded the song, burned a CD, then reimported it as a .wav file so she could embed it into her presentation. You just need to remember to change your defaults in the iTunes preferences menu.

Another site I download from is Tesco.com. It's a British supermarket chain, not unlike Walmart. You can get British music that you can't find on iTunes on this site. (Stuff that hasn't been released in the U.S.)

iTunes has a free version of Carol of the Bells as the single of the week.

Thanks, but I don't have nor am I likely to get an iPod. I tried the WalMart site but most of their downloads are in WMA format with the licensing embedded.

With the iTunes stuff, once you burn it to a CD, the licensing is no longer embedded.

www.emusic.com has a very good catalogue, but it's not exactly unlimited. They charge $10/month for 30 downloaded songs/month. I believe there are more expensive options for more songs if you so choose, as well as a 25-download free trial (but be careful, when you get to song 26, they just charge your card, there's no warning or anything)

Real Networks' Rhapsody service has a lot of stuff. But I think they've been caught putting malware on users' computers in the past.

Rhapsody had never put malware on people's computers! I've been a subscriber from its start.

They do have some MP3 downloads now, but most are WMA. That's fine with me.

First of all, that was eight years ago. Real Jukebox doesn't even exist anymore.

The problem was the reporting back of statistics without the users' consent.

That wasn't harmful to users' systems and therefore can't be called malware.

I've had several MP3 players and unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a single site where one can get all the songs one might like. I've used iTunes, but it's a bit cumbersome if you don't own an iPod - you have to download the songs, burn them to CD, then rip the CD using Windows Media Player to convert the songs to a different format. I've also used Rhapsody.

As always, given enough time, I will answer my own questions. I have found that Amazon is in Beta for a new MP3 download site. I haven't explored enough to see the scope of their catalogue, but this is akin to what I am looking for.

I don't know what your definition of malware is, but it's different from mine. Software that spies on your customers without getting their permission first is definitely malware in my book.

You're right, it was eight years ago and Real Jukebox doesn't even exist anymore. I'd argue a big part of why it doesn't exist anymore is because they got caught doing this.

Who knows whether or not they'll try something like this in the future. People can make their own decisions as to whether the fact that it's been eight years since they were caught spying on their own customers makes them an acceptable risk or not.
