Justin looks very young; in fact he's only 20. When he was a junior in high school he started taking night classes and summer courses because he "had time on his hands" and realized that he could graduate early. He's majoring in history and getting ready for graduate school. He's insists that he's not a geek, he's a nerd. A geek is more science and sci-fi oriented. He started out as a chemistry major but after lab explosions and lots of broken glass he decided that wasn't for him. He's a bookworm and appreciates the occasional Latin pun with his friends.

Since he originally appeared to have no clue, I'd really like to know what insight he had that made him think he had the answer.

Justin looked and sounded young for a high school senior, much less a college senior!

As for his being a nerd, he was what I'd call a "made for TV" nerd, with that ready, easy banter about Latin puns and his incredibly expressive face (he went through about three different expressions just as a single question was read). A real nerd or geek doesn't sparkle in public like that. Thus, the APs never cast us and Meredith never has a chance to gush over what wonderful contestants we are.

I'd like to know that too. I knew the answer, but I'm trying to think, if I didn't, what a logical guess would be. And I think pleated would be at the bottom of the list. And I think I'd ask the audience if I didn't know.

I knew the answer. I was yelling A at the TV.

I saw that word in one of those "Word Power" quizzes in Reader's Digest. They put lots of unusual words in those quizzes. I take the quiz every month and usually do pretty well on it.

It was on prime time BAM. I got to watch it from seat six. The dude ran his stack to $500,000, and walked away when neither he nor his phone a friend could say how many men played the Three Stooges. My PAF had it cold. The show aired 1st week of April, 2001.

This raises the question: when is an answer not an answer? If the contestant doesn't have to say the letter or the answer as worded, how close is close enough? What if he said

Just curious. At he least he explained why Picabo didn't medal in her last Olympics -- she was supposed to be in the ski jump!

I suspect they'd have to stop the tape and have Michael Davies and the lawyers make a decision on some of these "what ifs", but for the two examples you mention, my opinion is that the first would be adequate but the second would not.

Pickabo Street was NOT a ski jumper, BTW. She was a downhill racer.

An evil part of me thinks that contestants should be ruled wrong, as on Jeopardy, when they provide extraneous information that is incorrect.
