Secret Santa for Joe Gibbs

#1 Post by macrae1234 » Mon Dec 03, 2007 2:47 pm

An NFL rule book refresher course

In yesterday's loss to Buffalo with 8 seconds to go Buffalo place kicker Lindell made a 51-yard attempt that didn't count because Gibbs called timeout just as the ball was snapped. Gibbs then called another timeout as Lindell lined up a second time, but consecutive timeouts aren't allowed in the NFL -- and they result in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty when specifically called to freeze the kicker.

The penalty gave Lindell a much easier kick in the rain. His game-winner extended his streak to 17 consecutive made field goals, tying the franchise record.

Gibbs said he asked an official if it was OK to call a second timeout, and the coach thought the official said yes. Still, the harried moments of a game's final seconds are hardly a good time to be learning the rule book.

"There's nobody to blame but myself," Gibbs said. "I should have known the rule."

If Joe Gibbs doesn't know the rules by now, I don't know that there's any hope for him. He needs to get together with Tom Coughlin and go find a porch on which to sit and whittle.

Plus, it's about time my poor Bills WON with a last-second field goal.

What a terrible week for a Redskin fan like me. But an even worse week for the team.

To have what amounted to a Sean Taylor tribute game end like that one was . . . I think sad is the word I'm looking for.

The game wasn't lost with Coach Joe's mental error. It was lost because the 'Skins couldn't score touchdowns instead of field goals early. It was lost because the decimated offensive line couldn't open any holes. It was lost because Campbell fumbled (again). And it was lost because instead of throwing a pass on third and 8 with less than 2 minutes to go, they ran the ball and punted away to the Bills. (Oh, and credit should be given to the Bills who never gave up in what had to be a pretty emotional situation for them, too.)

While Coach Joe's first tenure with the Redskins was marked by halftime adjustments and the expectation of winning, Gibbs 2.0 has been marked by consistently conservative playing-not-to-lose play calling.

When they announced Gibbs was coming back, I said there was only one other Second Coming that could make me happier.

Yesterday was the low point. I am a lifelong 'Skins fan, I want to win, but I feel so bad for Gibbs - the week he's had holding the team together (no one could have done that better), then to forget a rule in a crucial situation at the end of the game. He took the full blame, though. I still respect him, and believe he has earned the right/privilege of leaving on his terms. His contract runs one more year - we'll see what happens.

I don't hold out a lot of hope for the next game - how in the world are they going to be ready to play Thursday night after all that happened last week, then the game yesterday, and flying back and forth to Miami today for the funeral?
