Hey

Have you stopped to consider what a useful word "hey" has become?

On this bored, it is a cue to a semi-private message -- directed at one person, but not a secret to the rest of the community, i.e. "Hey, Pea!"

In teen lingo, at least in these parts, it has practically replaced "Hi" as the monosyllabic greeting grunt of choice.

This in addition to all the other uses it has historically had.

I think I like it.

Don't tell the teens in your area, but I know people who've been using Hey as a standard greeting sine I was a teen, about XX years ago.

Unfortunately the interjection "But, Hey!" gives me an unpleasant image.

Especially after this morning's discussion of tinsel and ribbons and stuff...

Those words usually preface two similar words. "But, hey......butthead." Not that they've ever been uttered to me, of course.

When I use my mommy voice and say "Hey (slight pause) You!" Everyone stops.

I like having that power.

lol....That "mommy voice" can move mountains. Not only does it corral rowdy children and misbehavin' puppies, it can bring full grown men to their knees. It could probably stop the world's natural rotation in its tracks if enough mommies said it in unison. I love the mommy voice.

I also love how "deliberately disobedient" has become board vernacular.

Kids today...

"Tell them Gomer says hey!"

Yeah, that Pyle was real gangsta.

I also have a mommy look. Pealette is 38 years old and she still falls to pieces if I give her that look.
