I know 2 Thoms
One is our own TBone.
The other is a young man who calls the paper every night and asks for the Miami hurricanes baseballs core. He also asks me to mail him paper copies of their schedule, the Connecticut Sun schedule, and the Oakland As and the Miami Dolphins. I think that's most of them. Oh, and the NCAA men's and women's brackets.
If I am way busy he says he will call back later. He is not whiny like some of our other regulars. I'd say he's the best of our special needs callers.
Once I asked him about his own internet access, not to be mean but just curious. He said he uses the computers at the library but he can't blow up the text enough to read it sometimes. So I figured he has some sort of visual challenge. No biggie.
That was months ago, or a year.
So tonight he asks if I know when the Panthers schedule will be out and I say sometime near the draft, in a few weeks. He wants to know when the Dophins are coming here so he can get tickets. I said if he can't get them regular, to let me know because I have PSLs and can hook him up.
I have been thinking about selling the PSLs anyway. The in-game experience is not so much fun for me anymore because of the loudness and the drinking. I'm not saying people shouldn't do those things, but it isn't fun for me, is all.
So when I told Thom he could have my tickets if he can't buy his own, he gets way excited, and says, "Oh, boy, that would be wonderful."
Then he says, "I want to see the Dolphins before this cancer takes me."

I had just meant he could buy them from me but of course now they are his for free.
We never know who we are being kind to.
It isn't even that one day it could be me. It is that how hard is it to be nice to someone on the phone for 30 seconds?
One of the people who was laid off last week is hateful to people on the phone, to where I wonder why he picks it up. I am glad he never got hold of this kid.

Skoop, FWIW, in my eyes, your coolness factor is through the roof.

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

You are cool. One of the lessons I've been trying to teach my son is Ya Never Know. Fortunately, he seems to be getting it.
Do you think you should warn Thom2 about the rowdies?
Love,

Re: I know 2 Thoms
Dang, it brought tears to my eyes.
I was teary anyway as I just heard one of Natalie's childhood friends from 4 year old kindergarten through
high school had a baby boy Saturday who only lived a couple of hours. Apparently they have known for
several months that there was a problem, but there was hope it could be corrected once the baby was
here. She's recovering from a C-section and then has go home with empty arms. Since the baby lived
a short time, they will also have to have a funeral. My heart hurts for this couple as well.

I hope the kid gets to the game. I hope his cancer magically disappears (they call this remission, in medical terms). I hope a lot of people's cancer magically disappears, including that of a couple friends who are undergoing chemo &/or radiation now. It doesn't hurt for magical disappearances to have some medical help if they can get it.

Nice story Skoop. Speaking about the Panthers are you planning a visit here to see them when they play AZ?

Re: I know 2 Thoms
I saw a game there last year so probably not. I will probably shoot for an away game at New Orleans or Tamp Bay, as I have visited several other cities but not even all the ones in my own conference yet.macrae1234 wrote:Nice story Skoop.
