Benicio Del Toro ( rumored for Moe), Sean Penn (Larry) and Jim Carrey (in negotiations for Curley) may play the Three Stooges in an upcoming Farrelly Brothers movie. Penn is the only confirmed signing so far.

From what I've been able to gather, this will be somewhere between a biopic and a classic Stooges short, i.e., the actors will play actors Moe, Larry, and Curly, but will get in "real" life typical Stooges situations. It will be set in the present day. There was a TV movie about the Stooges a few years back (with Michael Chiklis as Curley) that was a traditional dramatic biopic. The Stooges had a lot of bad things happen to them during their lives that would make for an excellent big screen drama, but I don't expect it to go in that direction with the Farrelly Brothers at the helm.

Many people who have unfavorable opinions of Penn for his politics may feel this is perfect casting, but he's never done the type of broad, slapstick humor that a "real" Stooges film would require. Neither has Del Toro, although he does bear a resemblance to Moe. Carrey, of course, would be a natural, but his build is wrong for the pudgy Curley.

After seeing Milk, I'm willing to give Penn the benefit of the doubt. It didn't take more than 2 minutes for me to forget that was Sean Penn on the screen.

I'd have put Penn as Moe, Carrey as Larry (though too tall), and Kevin James as Curly. Penn to me looks like Moe in his later years.

Maybe David Spade as Larry or Moe? Whatever. Neither the rumored casting nor the directors make this look like a winner with Stooge fans.

What terrible casting!

I know Moe's grandson who looks just like him.

What an easy gig for Penn and Carey. They won't even have to act.

I read this and I can't believe that they could even consider Carrey for Curly. There is no physical resemblance of any kind, although he can certainly do the physical comedy required. Same for del Toro as Moe. Penn as Larry might be OK, but he doesn't strike me as the slapstick type (as you noted).

I thought Mel Gibson owned the big screen rights to the Three Stooges. Maybe they expired.

Or cash flow was getting low over at Casa del Batshit.

From the comparative pictures atop this article, the resemblance is apparent.
