Idolly Speaking - 3/25/09

Since I was actually able to watch the show in semi-real time tonight (I actually was eating while the first half-hour was on, so I could watch the DVR version and skip the commercials), I decided to do a full-length review.

I was actually looking forward to this week, since I love Motown (the music, not so much the city). Before the show started I predicted that the best of the night would be Matt, Danny and Lil, since their styles seemed the most likely to be served by that style. Surprisingly, one of these three disappointed, and one of my least favorites (if not THE least favorite of mine) contestants just killed.
Spoiler
Matt - Let's Get It On (Marvin Gaye) - The song is right in Matt's wheelhouse, and despite the peppered-in falsettos (which, admittedly are indicative of the Motown sound, so I better let 'em go), he did the song justice. In fact, there were sections that made me think he was doing an impression of Marvin....which means he wasn't "making the song his own". However, it wasn't karaoke, it was contemporary sounding and modern at the same time as being a tribute. And once again, I found myself agreeing with Paula (God help me): he didn't overdo the riffs and runs, he made them work in context, so they didn't sound out of place. A.

Kris - How Sweet It Is (Marvin Gaye again) - Hated the beginning, it was way too snarky looking. For that matter, so was most of the rest of the song. It reminded me more of James Taylor's version than Marvin's. Kris tried to infuse a little John Mayer/Jason Mraz into it, but for me (maybe because I'm not a big fan of either Mayer or Mraz), it just didn't work as well as Matt for me. I did like the ending glory note, though. I certainly didn't like it as much as the judges. B-.

Scott - You Can't Hurry Love (The Supremes) - Is it wrong of me to be thinking that Ray Charles would have been a better fit for Scott? Yeah, I know, I'm going to hell, and anyway, Ray wasn't Motown, but still.... OK, now that that's behind me, on to the performance: I liked about 80% of it. Once Scott loosened up, and began really making the song his own (in a way neither of the two singers who preceded him did), it got 100% better. But there were sections that were just not good, and I guess it balances out to about a C+.

Megan - For Once In My Life (Stevie Wonder) - It's been said that Megan reminds one of Adele, or Amy Winehouse, or Duffy....the problem is, I don't much like them, either. It didn't help that she was consistently flat start to finish. There were one or two very nice notes, but they didn't come close to compensating for the 4,000 bad ones. She'd make a great Miss Congeniality in the pageant she was singing in, though. D-.

Anoop - Ooh, Baby Baby (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles) - I know, I know, I said above that I needed to let the falsetto go this week, but I just can't. Mainly because Anoop, who can be very strong in the middle register, sounds AWFUL in falsetto. He just doesn't have the vocal strength for it. And (I'm sorry Mr. Robinson) that song is just sooooooooooooo dull, it needs strength in the falsetto, or it falls apart. That's how Smokey made such a dull song into a classic, but Anoop didn't I did like that last note, though. C-.

Michael - Ain't Too Proud to Beg (The Temptations) - I really liked the growly parts of Michael's performance. He did kinda remind me of Taylor Hicks a little, though, and that's not necessarily a good thing. I yet again had to agree with Paula regarding Michael's stage presence reminding one of Vegas lounge singers. Playing with the crowd, his mike handling, it was just amateurish. I didn't dislike it as much as Simon did, but he's right: it wasn't good enough. C-.

Lil - Heat Wave (Martha and the Vandellas) - Like Matt, this week's theme fit Lil like a glove. Too bad she didn't try the glove on first. MOST of the time, especially during the verses, she was terrific, but her choruses were painful. She was trying so hard to take the judges' mantra of "make it your own" to heart she just got lost. The good far outweighed the bad, though, and on the whole, I liked it (despite the fact that she must be spending too much time at the mansion with Shreiky McShreikerson), but she's been much better. B-.

Shreiky....um....Adam - Tracks of My Tears (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles) - FINALLY! Adam sings a song that only shreiks on the final falsetto note. I still absolutely HATE falsetto, but I am not too proud to admit that Adam really did surprise me tonight, and he was the only one to really pull off the falsetto. He definitely did do justice to one of my favorite songs of all time. Unlike the judges, though, I found his "look" to be so plastic that he looked to me kinda like Jude Law in "A.I." -- like he's not human. But I did agree that it was the best of the night to this point (and unless Allison, my new favorite since the criminally underappreciated Alexis was booted off last week, KILLS "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" in the pimp spot, probably the best period). A. (Disclosure: I had Adam at A+ until Allison sang, but then I had to downgrade him slightly because I had no way to show how much better Allison was.)

Danny - Get Ready (The Temptations) - The Short Version: I really liked it. The Qualification: I hated the fact that he consistently took a breath between the "get" and the "ready". The Second Qualification: I think he overenunciates. The Slightly Longer Version: One of the best of the night, after UsuallyShreiky and Matt, although he, too, was kinda awkward in his stage presence. A-.

Allison - Papa Was a Rolling Stone (The Temptations) - Another of my favorite Motown songs, and I take back what I said above in Adam's critique: Allison DID kill "Papa," and IMO gave the single best performance not just of the night, but of this whole SEASON tonight. Absolutely brilliant. A+.

If it were up to me, the bottom three would be Megan, Anoop and Michael, and Megan would be leaving. Since it's not, I'll predict the bottom three will be Scott, Megan and Michael, with Megan STILL going home.

Too bad they thought they were short on time, so no judges asked Danny why he didn't sing the backup line as he agreed to do in the interview with Smokey.

Loved Adam, loved Allison.

After 9 singers I thought I would have not have to make any votes tonight. Michael or Megan or Scott will leave. Adam and Danny are going nowhere. I still stand by my prediction the judges will save Lil if and when needed. Matt, Kris and Anoop can fight for 5th place. But Allison sang last and changed my mind. She earned and deserves votes just to make sure she does not hit the bottom three this week.

Is Danny running away with America's vote? The judges seemed on a mission to take him down a peg this week, so I wondering if he is in a Taylor Hicks position of being judge proof and Simon and Co. don't like Danny's vote totals way ahead of everyone else?

Sadly I'm finding these contestants tremendously underwhelming. Since season one, I looked so forward to every show; this year it's becoming eh - whatever, and am actually more anticipating the guest singers (tomorrow is Stevie Wonder :), and perhaps someone else, can't remember). Adam is the only one I'm finding myself looking forward to.

No one thrilled me tonight, but I guess I liked Anoop the best, followed by Adam, Allison, and Matt. Danny and Chris (who reminds me of Rick Moranis as one of the beer drinking McKenzie Brothers from SCTV) were ok, and the rest didn't impress. I do still like "Megan Joy" (she's misplaced her last name somewhere along the way...) simply because she's adorable. Someone mentioned that she should have sung "My Guy," that probably would have been a better choice for her.

Ho hum.

Just watched "The Secret Life of Bees" and thought AI alum Jennifer Hudson did a fine job. I would call her part (Rosaleen) the third lead - she has a lot of lines early on and then it becomes more of a group story.

Queen Latifah (August Boatwright) is awesome as always. June Boatwright is played by singer Alicia Keys, which was a revelation for me. Very good. There are a few times when some of them sing but it is deliberately not polished. The sisters in the book were 60ish but they are younger here and it works just fine.

The third sister, May, is played by Sophie Okonedo, a British actor who steals the whole story. Her character represents pure love but also unmitigated sadness. She takes on the emotions of everyone around her, without a filter.

Anyway. The story is mostly women, though the men are interesting in their limited roles. Civil rights, a little spirituality, and a little beekeeping. If there had been a dog, it would have been perfect (cats do not like movies so much, and they don't like the bees at all).

OK, now I have someone to REALLY REALLY root for. I am so in love with young Allison's voice (her VOICE, I said..she's only a year older than my oldest grandchild, ok?). She has none of that throaty whiny yowl that most young singers have that drives me nuts. I actually let out a whoop by the end of her performance. Best of the SEASON so far and one that is gonna be tough to top. If she's in the bottom 3 tonight then America's taste is officially up its collective ass. A++

I didn't like Adam at all last week. This week he was terrific. He restrained himself and his performance really brought out the emotion in the lyrics. You really felt like he was experiencing the pain in Smokey's words. Nice job. A

Kris did a nice John Mayer/Jason Mraz shading on his song. I thought it was pretty enjoyable and a nice way to freshen up a tired classic. B+

Matt was a bit too free with his riffing. A little more restarint and it would've earned an A. He DID hit all his notes, though. B

Danny was pretty solid on his pitch and his tone. Weird phrasing, though. Breaths came frequently and at inopportune times. Not his best, to be sure. B

Anoop Was excellent when in natural voice. He did some very very nice things with the song in the middle section. The beginning and end were shaky. When he sang the falsetto for Smokey in the piano room he sounded terrific. However, when you're singing for your professional life in front of millions of viewers holding your career in your hands, you're liable to be a bit nervous. And when you're nervous, your falsetto is the first thing to go, as you have to have firm control of your voice to pull it off. Anoop did not. It was not bad, though, just shaky in places. B-

SCott started off nicely but was just blah after that. Competant but hardly memorable. C

Michael was nowhere near as bad as the judges who obviously want him gone now. He wasn't great but he didn't suck eggs either. Accusing him of yelling through the whole song is asinine, considering that........................

..............one of their chosen ones, Lil, did the same damn thing. I hated this performance, she not only yelled at us, she yelled offkey half the time. and couldn't keep up with the sprightly tempo. Yet SHE only gets a tender slap on the wrist (and reacts with a pouty/offended "oh no you dint" look on her face). The judges are tools. Michael C-, Lil D

Alas, poor Megan. This was another mess. And not a hot one. We are at the point where likability alone will just not cut it. Time to say goodbye. D-

I really enjoy listening to Motown music when done either by the originals or by competent covers. Most of tonight's renditions were music to my ears. It was great to see many of these songs brought "up to date." A few missed the mark but, on the whole, it was an enjoyable night. I think, though, that they can now condense the show down to 90 minutes. Two hours to preview 10 90-second song renditions is just dragging it out too long, IMO.

Far and away the performers of the night were Allison and Adam. Adam, a young Kurt Russell-playing-Elvis look-alike, showed not only can he belt and be theatrical, but he can sing. It's no stretch to go out on a limb and say that he will be in the top three. I think Allison should also be in the top three. But, her vote-getting ability is suspect, despite her vocal prowess. The remaining top-three performer will, IMO, be either Danny or Matt. Lil showed early promise but last night's performance was not good, IMO.
Kris and Anoop a slightly behind the top tier with Scott, Megan and Michael making up tonight's bottom three. I think the judges might save Megan but Michael will be going home tonight.

I clearly am off the boat when it comes to one of these contestants, who everybody seems to just love. I don't get Allison. Maybe it's a personality thing, but I roll my eyes whenever she performs. Is she good? Yeah, but I just cannot see her being the American Idol. There is just - something - about her that rubs me the wrong way. Since she was in the bottom three last week, maybe I'm not the only one who thinks this.

Adam's performance gave me chills. I think he is far and away the most talented of the 10. I liked his yesterday look much more than the Goth-ish look we are more used to. A quick ranking of yesterday's performances:

1. Adam
2. Anoop
3. Kris
4. Allison (I'm probably swayed by all the gushing)
5. Danny
6. Matt
7. Michael
8. Lil
9. Scott
10. Meghan

Predicted bottom 3: Michael, Scott and Meghan (I wouldn't be surprised if Matt snuck in there as well, based on him going first). Going home: I'll go with Michael, even though based on the whole collection of performances, I think it should be Scott.

Put me in the camp for people who love Allison's voice.

She makes me think of what Janis Joplin might have sounded like, if Janis had not discovered Jim Beam and drugs at such an early age. Allison also is better looking and/or better groomed than Janis, although that particular bar is not high.

I was afraid Matt would stick to the piano once again, but he moved away from it and had a decent performance. His playing eclipses his singing ability, but he's not a bad singer, and thankfully he did not dedicate Let's Get It On to his parents, as some poor misguided competitor did one year. I mean, WTF? It was kind of sanitized for our protection, but ths IS a family show.

I still love Kris, he sounds great, he doesn't overdo everything like some people, and they keep burying him in an early performance slot because he doesn't go to 11. He'll stick around until next week, though.

I just can't look at Scott anymore. Sorry. And he didn't sound so good either. He'll hit the bottom 3 tonight for a change.

Once again, I like the IDEA of a Megan, but as for the execution? I'm all for it after that. Painful. Wobbly. Ugh ugh ugh and more ugh.

Anoop has a beautiful, pure tone to his voice. A few shaky notes here and there, but he did what he does best. He needs to give a high-energy performance next week that isn't cheesy so he doesn't fall into a snoozy ballad trap. But these kind of songs showcase his type of voice best.

I said "Vegas" before Paula did. I say "Vegas" a lot these days anyway, but I meant Michael's performance. Not painfully bad like Megan's, just not so good. He's hit his personal glass ceiling.

Lil just shouted for two minutes and the weave was hideous. She has a great voice but doesn't pick songs to showcase it and hasn't shown one ounce of originality or creativity.

Adam looked like a real person and sang like a real person. Finally. Very nice, for a change.

Danny sounds good but I hate the way he performs and dances. That was the right kind of song for him, but he just cheesed it up so much. He looked silly going right after the New, Improved Adam--Now With Less Makeup!

Allison is a silly, funny, unpretentious teenager with an old soul and an amazing voice. She didn't sing the song as well as David Hernandez did last year, but she sang it better, if you get what I mean. That song shouldn't sound clean and pretty.

Bottom 3 will be Scott, Michael, and Megan, with Michael going home. No save will be used tonight.
