Runescape info wanted

Does anybody here know anything about Runescape.
My boys are getting into it and I need to do some research online-but any specific or general thoughts are appreciated.
As I have said before-I have not let them have (and I will not let them have) a WII, PS3 etc.
However, I recognize the times they live in and their friends' interests and so forth so I don't have a problem with limited Runescape. It has been a little more than I realized so I have to nip it in the bud somewhat.
However, the oldest told Mrs S that he has 2 accounts-one where he is the right age (he lets little brother use that one) and one where he is 18-apparently, a friend told him to do that so they could do more things. For some reason, that really doesn't bother me-maybe it should.

Runescape is a MMORPG (massively multi-player online role-playing game). From what I've heard it's a lot like World of Warcraft - players create a character and participate in a series of adventures designed to increase the character's power and wealth. If WoW is any indication, Runescape can be addictive and interfere with other life pursuits (much the way that the game Everquest was nicknamed "Evercrack"). In WoW the violence can tend to be a bit graphic and the interaction with other players can sometimes be R-rated; I suspect Runescape is the same, unless there's an "age filter" to put younger players into a realm where such isn't the case. WoW has no such thing, so I can't speak to its efficacy.

So it's like posting gratuitously on the bored?

It certainly seems that way for some people.

Have you read the Wikipedia artcle, for a basic overview?

I don't have any experience with this game, but I can think of two general questions you'd want to know. First, does the game have any content (violence, language, etc.) that you'd object to your boys being exposed to? And, second, what about this over-18 account your son says he has? Does that open up any game community activity he shouldn't have access to?
