TV news jumps the shark

Last night my local NBC affilliate had a serious news report on a psychic, saying how she had helped people and even telling how to contact her. I think they were trying to promote the show Medium, but that's no excuse.

ABC Evening News almost always has a "news" story which links to one of their later "news" programs, like 20/20, Nightline, or some special they're flogging. Nothing more than a self-advertisement, if you ask me.
Sometimes I wish they'd all go back to the 1950's, when both local and national news programs were fifteen minutes long. Remove the filler from today's shows, and that's the maximum time they'd need, even with commercials.

The 9:00 news on the local Fox station is pretty well unwatchable on Idol nights beacuse about half of the "news" is about the show.... most of which is probably already known to anyone who was watching it.....

I don't really mind news show promoting other shows on their network. It is a business and it's better than the alternative (state-run TV). However, presenting a psychic as providing a valuable service, especially when they say they "defend the consumer" (as all local news says these days). is inexcusable.

Was she a psychic with a national reputation or just somebody local?
I'm interested in doing a little googling.

Be careful. She might "see" that you're googling her, and who knows what she'll do to you. Well, other than another psychic.

Unless she's the Sixth Sense kid, I'm safe!

If it's the guy from The Mentalist, he's helped solve a couple of dozen cases so far....

Give her a call. If she has to ask who is calling, drop her.

I have a grudge against the Mentalist: it's a ripoff of PSYCH on the USA Network.
I hope the creator didn't claim to just have a "vision" about the show.
At least on Psych, they've made a couple of inside jokes about that show that were pretty funny.

I e-mailed the local alternative weekly about this. The news editor responded with "thanks for the tip." Maybe they will do a story about it.

What kind of story? An alternative weekly may not be particularly skeptical of her claims.

They take great delight in pointing out the mistakes of other local media outlets.
