My car didn't even have a ding on it

So I'm driving down the freeway in the middle lane at a pretty fast clip when all of a sudden I see a lone orange traffic cone laying on it's side, coming up right up in front of me. Cars on either side, nothing I can do but slam into it, hoping I'll clear it. Hear a bang, see it behind me in the mirror, and hope for the best. After coming to my destination I gingerly check out the front of the car... and find lots of damage to the grill, and a crack in the thin strip of bumper underneath it. Of course, the whole bumper will have to be replaced as it's all once piece.

I wonder if it's worth making a report with the highway patrol to see if there's any chance they'll take responsiblity? Seems unlikely...

Crap.

MMM Driving Tip #87347123: Better to just swerve into cars on the side of you rather than run into a poor, innocent, uninsured traffic cone....

I feel your pain.

I flattened & had to replace a tire & to check the alignment this year due to unavoidable junk (small but heavy hardware, in this case; it was junk to the right of me, cars to the left of me) the people fixing a city street left in the street. They didn't exactly put glow strips to make it light up at night, which is when I encountered it, on it, either.

Most unpleasant.

I once had a truck blow a tire right in front of me on the interstate. A chunk flew off and made a beeline for my face. I was in the far left lane with a concrete wall a few feet to the left and a line of cars to the right. I was able to swerve a bit to the left so that the chunk hit more on the passenger side of the windshield. It cracked into an enormous indented spider web mostly on the passenger side but didn't break through completely. Didn't have time to stop if I was going to make my destination so I spent the rest of the trip hoping the windshield didn't come crashing in the rest of the way.

And of course the cost to replace it was about equal to the deductable which made it useless to bother reporting it.

Cal Trans is not the only one who uses those orange cones. So unless there are witnesses who saw them place it there or carelessly let it fall from their truck......

Ah, windshields. They, & car windows, subject to vandalism quite a lot around here, are why I still have comprehensive insurance on my car with a book value, these days, less than my rent. Everything else covered by comprehensive (such as flood damage, which I've also had; rising water got into my original computer, which sits on the floor under the passenger's seat, that runs the electronic ignition system) usually winds up falling just at the deductable level, but glass is covered at any price level. At least for those insured in Massachusetts. This is the only place I've had a car; so its not true elsewhere?

Not true in Georgia to my knowledge. I guess next time something happens I will have to ask. Of course if a claim is likely to increase my insurance cost and the damage is at or near my deductable I tend to think twice before making a claim. Which kind of defeats the purpose of insurance I suppose if it is only good for major incidents.

Like being in the middle of a tornado. That anniversary just passed. The downtown Peachtree Plaza Hotel still doesn't have all their windows matching yet.

They don't increase your rates for using the the comprehensive "free glass" clause in Massachusetts.

I've had one windshield & 2 windows replaced on my cars, all broken due to vandalism, not flying highway rocks or tree branches in the wind. When the vandal broke the windshield, they left their big rock on the driver's seat. I guess either they weren't planning to break any more windshields that day, or they lived near a big-rock pile.

Wasn't planning on it... :P

I had considered that weekend, but having done Final Four once for a wedding, I wasn't keen to brave those crowds again.

"OMGWTF Way" is one of my favorites, which is why it had been there for awhile, and may make a return once I decide to squash the cock-a-roach!

Crap.

So who was driving?

We have that in CT too...you get "full glass" with comprehensive and you dont pay anything if you need a windshield replaced and it doesn't affect your rates.
