The Coen brothers are planning to remake "True Grit". The claim to be stickng closer to the source material than the John Wayne movie did, but I still consider it Unneccessary.

John Wayne must be spinning in his grave right now.

Casting suggestions:

John Goodman
Justin Timberlake
Miley Cyrus

It could work.

Kind of related-

I read a column by somebody and one of his disappointments (or whatever) is that the John Wayne of Rooster Cogburn never got (or took) a chance to play Falstaff-He thought he may have been a wonderful Falstaff.

Very interesting idea.

Ain't life funny? My uncles hated John Wayne! Said he was the biggest draft-dodger in Hollywood. Said that was the reason he became such an uber patriot later. My dad loved everything John Wayne. ( I loved True Grit and that's about it for the Duke.)

I'm not one of those guys who loves the Duke no matter what, but there are several of his movies that I just love. The thing is, Wayne is usually the worst thing in them, although he's usually pretty good at least, and terrific at best. Specifically, "The Searchers," "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" and "Stagecoach" rank among the best (if not THE best) Westerns ever made, and "The Quiet Man" is one of those movies I could watch 5 times in a row and not tire of. The fact remains that it's not just that they're all Wayne movies....or all John Ford movies....it's that they're both. Ford and Wayne were simply perfect for each other, and each minimized the faults of the other, and amplified the other's strengths.

Wayne was always underappreciated as an actor, and maybe justifiably so, but Ford brought out some absolutely wonderful performances (especially in "The Searchers" and "Liberty Valance," IMHO). Nobody but Ford had that effect on Duke, and I just can't imagine anyone else besides Duke playing Ethan Edwards or Tom Doniphan.

That's very possible, about sticking closer to the source material, which was mostly about Mattie. And they made her do a couple dumb things in the movie that she would never have done in the book because she was the smartest. Next to General Price, of course (the cat).

Also, I hope they come with a better actor than Glen Campbell to play the bonehead Texan.

I'm not much of a John Wayne fan, either, but there are two of his movies that are "must watch" for me - Hatari! and McLintock.

As Mad Magazine put it in their parody of the original, "Then who's going to sing the theme song? YOU?" (meaning John Wayne)

If Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood can play lead roles in a western musical, there's no reason The Duke can't sing in one as well.

And Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan have already shown that you don't have to sing on key to become a famous singer.
