That's very possible, about sticking closer to the source material, which was mostly about Mattie. And they made her do a couple dumb things in the movie that she would never have done in the book because she was the smartest. I'm not one of those guys who loves the Duke no matter what, but there are several of his movies that I just love. The thing is, Wayne is usually the worst thing in them, although he's usually pretty good at least, and terrific at best. Specifically, "The Searchers," "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon," "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" and "Stagecoach" rank among the best (if not THE best) Westerns ever made, and "The Quiet Man" is one of those movies I could watch 5 times in a row and not tire of. The fact remains that it's not just that they're all Wayne movies....or all John Ford movies....it's that they're both. Ford and Wayne were simply perfect for each other, and each minimized the faults of the other, and amplified the other's strengths.
Wayne was always underappreciated as an actor, and maybe justifiably so, but Ford brought out some absolutely wonderful performances (especially in "The Searchers" and "Liberty Valance," IMHO). Nobody but Ford had that effect on Duke, and I just can't imagine anyone else besides Duke playing Ethan Edwards or Tom Doniphan.
As Mad Magazine put it in their parody of the original, "Then who's going to sing the theme song? YOU?" Also, I hope they come with a better actor than Glen Campbell to play the bonehead Texan.
