One night in Vegas - suggestions

That's what we'll have during our upcoming trip to visit the HC. Our flight back to Boston leaves at 7:30 AM, so we're driving in the day before and staying overnight. We'll probably have the afternoon and a short evening before retiring. We may hit a tourist attraction or two, or just wander around semi-aimlessly admiring all the glitz paid for by losing bettors.

I'm seeking a decent hotel near the airport with access to the Strip. AAA.com gives me the Best Western, a half-mile from the airport. Not sure if we'll drop off the rental car when we get into Vegas, or keep it for the extra day. How is the driving around and through the city?

Thanks for any ideas!

The lions at the MGM are free to look at. There is a free show in the casino at the Rio (off the strip but there are shuttles from other Harrah's properties). It's called the Show in the Sky. There's always the fountains at the Bellagio.

Driving the Strip is why they have a monorail. Any time after 4 pm, it's a parking lot. The airport is very close to the Strip, so any place close to the airport is close to the Strip.

I like to ride the monorail and wander aimlessly in the megaresorts. If you're not talking about a weekend night, then a show might not be so expensive if you go to the ticket outlet at the Fashion Show Mall, which is across from the Wynn. But just going through the big hotels is fun for me, and they have those elevated crosswalks so you can see both sides without having to dodge traffic.

There are several casinos which have dueling pianos and or karaoke in one of their bars. They are very entertaining. Harrahs has one. The Rio has a new one and I think NY NY might have one in the Times Square Bar. If you get there in time you might catch sunflower at the Coyote Ugly bar. Check the counter top.

Best Western McCarran Inn‎? Google Maps shows that right at the northern end of the runways! FYI.

Traffic on the strip can be congested in the afternoon and evening, but if you're content to stay around the southern end of the strip--the Excalibur, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, etc., they're not too far from the hotel you mentioned, so it wouldn't be bad.

I take it you're not interested in gambling? What would be your taste in shows? I really enjoyed Blue Man Group.

Skoop and kt can add more to this conversation. If you're interested in a show, there's always the Beatles Love show.

There is a dueling piano bar at Paris. That's my favorite one, but if Rio's is new maybe I'll have to check it out. I highly recommend the Bellagio fountain show at night from the top of the Eiffel Tower. There's a bar up there, you can relax, have a drink and see and hear the show perfectly without the crowds or guys handing out hooker cards.

I will not be dancing on any bars!!! You'll be more likely to find me in a poker room somewhere.

Also as far as driving, you can do it. If you stay on strip just check out parking prices, some of the newer hotels are starting to charge. Driving isn't bad if you just stay away from the strip as long as possible - take a side street and run parallel to the strip and you'll be okay. Definitely don't try to drive up and down it unless you have an hour.

There is also a discount ticket place down near MGM Grand (in the lobby of the building with the M&M store) and a little kiosk version near the 7-11 also at that end (If you aren't at the Fashion Show Mall end of the strip). If you go online you can print the voucher to go to the VIP side and not wait in line, which may allow you to buy in demand tickets before they sell out.

Too bad you all didn't know me when I actually did it. I should have used that as my BAM story.

I may have been mistaken about the dueling pianos at the Rio. I just checked their website and McFaddens and I see no mention of it. They do have bikini contests and karaoke.

Then I stand by that my favorite dueling piano bar is at Paris.

Beast is hallucinating.

Obviously, it's his subconscious expressing a fervent desire to go to Las Vegas and catch the excitement!

I mean, if he thinks even I could do such a thing...
