elwing's birthday dinner came off without a hitch; the boys even offered to pay for it.

Not only did she celebrate her birthday yesterday, but elwing also got a job offer - the one from a company that does tours in Ketchikan. I've mentioned this before but only as a theoretical possibility. She had a phone interview and the interviewer told her that the job was hers if she wanted it. Turns out it's more than just being a tour guide; it also includes driving buses (not the big over-the-road types but more like mini-buses) taking tourists to various locations. My son and DIL also had phonei interviews for the jobs in Tok that I mentioned, and from their reports they may be getting offers shortly - the interviewer told them that he had others to talk to, but it didn't sound like the usual brush-off. So come May I may have the house all to myself until September.

The Corps has a district office in Anchorage (just as I'm working in a district office in Louisville). But since they'll only be up there for a short time, I don't see any reason to move, even if there were job openings.

When elwing told me they had offered her the job I asked her if she wanted to do it. Her response: "I wouldn't have applied if I didn't want to do it." Still, she hasn't given them a definite answer. There are a few things she wants to check out first, such as the status of her unemployment benefits when she returns - would they be at the rate for the job in Alaska, or would they revert to what they were for her previous position (she's heard both). FTR the job pays $12.00/hr, but it's not full-time. She has to pay $9/day for housing, and meals are extra. The interviewer told her that if she wanted to pick up extra hours it might be possible by "subcontracting" with other tour companies.

But since they'll only be up there for a short time, I don't see any reason to move, even if there were job openings.

This is just the first step. The elves are hearing the call of the Great White North!

(And, yeah, if elwing is working in Ketchikan, it wouldn't be very helpful for you to relocate to Anchorage.)

That sounds like a fun job...maybe something I can look into for the summer if the condo sells. Not necessarily in Alaska, but I'm sure there are similar opportunities in other touristy locations. Definitely a fun way to meet new people and I believe the tips can be quite good.

I'm sure it varies from state to state, but in CA, they look at the average earnings for the previous 3 quarters. Taking a better-paying job for the summer would boost that average up, while taking a lesser-paying job would drag it down.
