I burned my hand

#1 Post by sunflower » Thu Mar 19, 2009 9:47 am

Pretty severely, with instant oatmeal. I was microwaving it and when it was done I grabbed it out of the microwave and it spilled onto my hand, where it sat, burning my skin while I ran to the sink. I put some cream on it that I think made it worse. I am going out in about 20 minutes to get some aloe. Ouch.

That's what you get for eating healthy oatmeal for breakfast.

A donut would not have burnt you!

:D

But the aloe should help. Do you mean the plant? There is very little aloe in the lotions so try to get one that is mostly aloe. I got my s-i-l some gel from the local health food store and it help with her neck during radiation.

This is why I don't ever eat oatmeal (unless it is hidden in a cookie).
Innocent, naive and whimsical. And somewhat footloose and fancy-free.

Do you eat your meat raw too?

Worst I ever burned myself, I was boiling up pasta shells, and scooped some out on a spoon to test for tenderness.

Dumped one right onto my upper lip, concentrating the boiling water it was holding like a cup right onto it!

I had a blister on my upper lip that was a beaut for about three days!

Running to the sink was right, but next time forget the cream. Run cool water over the burn to cool it down and minimize deeper damage. Don't use ice, that creates a bit of a shock -- too cold on top of too hot.

After it's cooled down, maybe a couple minutes, leave it open to the air if you can. Creams and bandages will keep in the residual heat.

When you're sure it's cooled as much as it's going to, I agree with everybody else who said to lather on the aloe. WONDERFUL stuff. Vitamin E is a great healing substance for burns but probably costs about 100 times as much as aloe.

On the plus side, I didn't use the cream for probably about half an hour. I kept cold compresses on it, I brought ice cubes to my desk and kept damp paper towels on them and then put those (not the ice itself) on my hand. I got the aloe and it is feeling good, although I see a couple spots that are starting to blister. I forgot about vitamin E, maybe I'll get some of that later.

Do you have a extra ordinary number of things "bad" happen to you or am I just misremembering?

No, seriously - I don't know why I am having such bad luck with everything lately! Maybe I shouldn't get on the plane tomorrow...I am in the exit row, I will have to carefully review the instructions... :?

Holy crap, Flower - I had the exact same accident a couple years ago! Boiling hot oatmeal from the microwave, bowl slipped out of my hand and hits the counter, and 2 large plops of oatmeal bounced onto the inside of my forearm where it seared into the skin until I could run to the sink. Several minutes of cold running water didn't even touch the pain. 2 large blisters formed almost immediately and I called my G.P. who phoned in a prescription burn cream to the pharmacy (called SSD - 1% Silver Sulfadiazine Cream). I suggest you call your doc and see if he/she can do the same - it'll prevent infection for the first few days, helps decrease scarring, and cools the pain. I do still have remnants of the scars though, which are embarrassing because they look exactly like someone used my arm to snuff out two cigars. I keep the cream in the bathroom; it comes in handy for curling iron burns on the neck. :? Hope it doesn't hurt too much.

I think when the brain gets overloaded looking at a lot of potential scenarios (trip/condo sale/move), we risk the chance of an increase in accidents.

And I am in no way implying fault in this but more like if the brain was less busy with a gazillion thoughts, you take time to look at the bowl of oatmeal and think, hmm, maybe I should let that cool a minute before I take it out. But this busy brain says 'what do I need to pack for Vegas/how am I going to get the file to OJ/did I buy enough do-si-do cookies' as you reach for the bowl of hot oatmeal.

I really do try to turn the brain down to simmer before I go to the lab bench for this very reason.

OMG! I'm so glad I'm not the only one. It felt like it was going to burn a hole right through my hand!!!!!!

The cold water didn't help much for me either. The cool compresses felt nice and so does the aloe, but I am reapplying it every few minutes!! My doctor is not in today (!!) so I will have to wait until tomorrow for that. It sounds like yours was a little worse if your blisters formed immediately...mine took a while and still don't appear to be fully formed.

I think you are absolutely right!!

I think I had just finished working on my 50 item to do list for tonight. I have to get it all done before tomorrow - and pack - so that the condo will be ready to show while I am away.

I am going to be happy when I am on the plane and can stop thinking for a while.

Ouch. Feel better soon! It's hard to type one-handedly. Ask Skippy.

So of course I'm wondering what flavor oatmeal it was, because I'm a detail kind of person. My scrawny daughter vacuums down two packets of apple cinnamon oatmeal in one sitting, so I buy a lot of flavored oatmeal.

I'm a maple brown sugar, myself. Sometimes, I add walnuts.

Hijack!
