Luz N. Rodriquez
FLORENCE — Luz N. Rodriquez, 34, died Monday, March 16, 2009, after a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel in Florence. A graveside ceremony and burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel.
Luz was born in Bogota, Colombia, in South America. Orphaned at an early age, Luz arrived in Florence 12 years ago accompanied by the Childrens Cross Connection Program, an organization that helped identify the appropriate candidate for the Florence Rotary Clubs first Gift of Life Project. Speaking no English, Luz put herself in the hands of strangers — who soon became friends and a part of the international medical care project. She embraced her new culture and people with enthusiasm. They very quickly became family, endeared by Luzs extraordinary warmth and loving nature. She underwent a life saving operation by dedicated physicians and medical professionals that provided her with quality of life, educational and work opportunities as well as an abundance of enduring relationships. Luz returned to Colombia in 1997, following her surgery and recuperation. In June 1997, she returned to the United States to pursue a career in nursing, sponsored by Dr. Mary Dean Brewer Alley and George Alley, whom she considered and referred to as her adopted parents and mentors.
In her short but precious life, Luz realized her goals of completing her education, becoming a nurse and obtaining her permanent residency in the United States.
Luz attended Florence-Darlington Tech and Francis Marion University. She began her career at McLeod Health as a Summer Career Student and a volunteer in order to gain a practical understanding of the clinical environment. She was later employed in the McLeod Laboratory as a Phlebotomist, graduated from the Surgical Tech Program and Associate Nursing Program at Florence-Darlington Technical College. She then worked as an LPN with both the McLeod Surgical Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department. For the past two years, she has served on the night shift team as an LPN with the McLeod Emergency Department.
Luz was predeceased by her parents and grandmother in Colombia, South America, and by her adopted mother, the late Dr. Mary Dean Brewer of Florence.
Surviving are her adopted parent, George Alley, and adopted grandparents, Mary and Barney Brewer of Columbia, and adoptedAunt and Uncle, Buddy and Lynn Brewer of Columbia, as well as a host of many, many friends and colleagues.
In lieu of flowers, memorials and gifts can be made to the McLeod Health Foundation, www.mcleodfoundation.org.

RIP Luz Rodriquez
Not all fairy tales end with Lived Happily Ever After, but Luz had a good run at it, but Ever After wasn't long enough.
Suitguy is not bitter.
feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
