Just wondering how many people have actually eliminated land line phones, switching only to cell phones?

I have been thinking about it for a while. Although I have DSL and I'd have to switch to cable, which wouldn't end up being cheaper. But I was thinking when I move I'll just have a cell and nothing else.

Let me tell you something, Missy. Back in my day, if we wanted to get ahold of someone, we had to run out on the hill with a blanket and light a fire. And I'm tellin' ya, the long distance service on that calling plan was terrible, plus if you weren't careful, about half of the state burned down. My great-great-great grandson got me one of those celluloid phones for my birthday last year, and I can't even use it because I don't know where the darn crank is on it. I'm tellin' ya, the junk they come out with these days......

The two sons that share an apartment have done that - they have only their cell phones to keep them connected with the world. It seems to work for them. As for elwing and me, we have phone service through our cable company (a package deal). If it weren't for that, I'd do away with ours.

I've done this. The benefits outweigh the downside by a considerable margin. No moe telemarketers, and I can easily be reached by anyone. Everyone who called me always used my cell anyway, so I used to pay $45/month just to hang up on all the telemarketers!

I think I just read the states of Utah and Oklahoma are leading the nation in the switch to all cell.

But you can still call my toll-free number from your cell phone! Call within the next 5 minutes to double your order, and I'll throw in a Snuggie, too!

I had cell only for about 6 years, but I ended up getting a no frills land line a little over a year ago (no caller id, no l/d, no nothing). The cell only plan worked well when I lived in a 800 sf bungalow and could hear it no matter where the phone was, but once I moved to a multi-story houseo, I couldn't hear it if I was on a different floor. And then my Mom would freak when she couldn't get hold of me all day and I wasn't answering her messages. So I got a LL when I was going to switch to DSL, but then Qwest pissed me off and I ended up keeping my cable internet. But I kept the phone (before taxes and fees: $13 after: $25!) just for my Mom's sake.

Also I had a crap cell phone for a while that kept turning itself off which was not a good thing when you're relying on that phone for important stuff.

So, in conclusion, if you are going to be moving and your mom can't come over to your house to check on you just because you haven't returned her calls all day, it's a pretty good idea.

And I have a no-frills TracPhone cell phone.

Together, these cost less than having one or the other would.

But I could deal without a land line if I had to.

We're all just one step away from having those personal communicator pins anyway- like on Star Trek!

I don't have a cell phone.

My mom hasn't let me use a cell phone or a credit card since the unfortunate pizza delivery incident.

I have discovered that it's very difficult to order stuff via eyelid messaging.

If I remember correctly, you are going with Verizon, right? I think they have the plans that you can use to make your cell phone link to a land based phone. We're with T-Mobile they have something similar.

I might be confusing two situations, but wasn't PSM doing something new with her phone a while back? I think it may have had something to do with this, but I might be mistaken.

I am on Verizon and I don't think we have that. I know T Mobile does. I'm staying on Verizon because I get a 20% discount on my plan. Not that $12 makes a huge difference, but yet, it does seem to sway me into staying.

Of course now I can't figure out my new phone so I'm actually glad I have a home phone!!!!

Actually I also use mine as a platform for DSL at $9.99/mo (think it changes to $18 or so after a year) and make some of my calls especially when I might go over call my minutes limit.

AT&T now has DSL service available without a "voice" line. I keep a bare bones phone line for my
home security system. They have cell backups on home security systems now as well, so there
may come a time when it's no longer needed for that either.

Kay - that is good to know! Because I currently have AT&T DSL but figured if I ditched the phone, I'd switch to cable internet. But that's more expensive. So this is a good option!!

We're having 1.5M bps DSL installed at my granddaughter's apartment today. No phone with it. If they had a phone already, it would have cost just $19.95 a month extra.
