Some TV Trivia

While not as impressive as Michael Landons 30 consecutive years in front of the camera in 3 shows Bonanza, Little House and Highway to Heaven 1959-1989, with a renewal of his current show for next season this actor has been in 3 series back to back to almost back to back lasting 5 or more years. Like Michael he is left handed who is he?

Mcnichol too much time between Ally McBeal and numb3rs and a stint on 24 doesn't count and too short a time on Chicago Hope
Harmon 4 episodes on West WIng can't fill the gap between Chicago Hope and NCIS
Neither are left handed

This fits the clue perfectly, since he said back-to-back-to-almost back.
Chicago Hope and
Dharma and Greg overlapped by one year.
And Thomas IS left-handed.
Yes- I cheated and looked it up.
Good job, SSS!

Supposedly, the reason Mandy Patinkin left Criminal Minds was that there was bad blood between him and Gibson from his days on Chicago Hope, that he wasn't aware Gibson would be on Criminal Minds when he signed up, and that whatever the problem was never got worked out during the two years he spent on Minds.

Yes indeed it was Thomas Gibson from Imdb who is exactly the same age as Tom Cruise
It is funny both guesse MacNichol and Harmon starred on Chicago Hope with him
Rumours persist about Patinkin's sudden departure from Criminal Minds. He simply failed to show up one day for a table read. He has contacted the entire cast to explain what is referred to as "personal reasons" for leaving. It seems that although Patinkin was prepared for the show to include violence the actual level of violence portrayed was unacceptable to the actor. He left to do more light hearted work.

Although he doesn't quite fit all the clues (especially since he passed away) but Bill Bixby had 3 big runs with My Favorite Martian, The Courtship of Eddie's Father and The Incredible Hulk.
Here is another Trivia question -
He played a supporting actor on a very popular sitcom.
The sitcom's name was the name of the starring actor, but not the name of the character in the sitcom.
His character's name on the show was Jerry.
His profession on the show was as a Dentist.
He went on to direct multiple episodes of that sitcom.
He subseqently went on to direct many episodes of several extremely popular / classic sitcoms.
Two different people meet all of the above criteria - can you name both of them?

Jerry Paris and Peter Bonerz. IIRC, Bonerz's character in "The Bob Newhart Show" was an orthodontist, not a dentist.

Peter Bonerz is obvious but I can't think of another.

Making a rare daytime bored appearance and guessing:
Dick Van Dyke for one.
No clue on the other.

Correct
(and if he was a orthodontist I guess I would need to change it to a Doctor who works on teeth!)

I'll challenge you on
Jerry Paris
; he was a director long before he was on the show.

Did you see anything in Frogman's question that said he wasn't? And someone else seems to think that an orthodontist isn't a dentist. Sheesh! Give Frogman credit for an interesting question!

While I didn't say that they never directed prior to being on the show - the one you challenged was not the original director of the show in question and I'm pretty sure that he appeared as a character on that show prior to directing any of its episodes. So I'm not sure which clue doesn't apply to
Jerry Paris
.

The version I've heard in a couple of pretty reliable sources (and not the "official" version that CBS put out) was that Patinkin and Gibson didn't get along well dating from their Chicago Hope days (Patinkin is a difficult actor for a lot of people to work with), that things didn't get better on Criminal Minds, and that Patinkin left for that reason.

Hey, if we can't quibble about TV character minutiae here on a trivia game show bored, where can we do it?
I thought it was a good question, which happened to be right in my wheelhouse. Sure wish TV Guide would sponsor a week of 'BAM.

I'm pretty sure both of the Jerrys have another thing in common. They
have never eaten poutine in Frogman's kitchen.
