The next episode of this HBO series reportedly will show an "endowment ceremony" on TV for the first time, which is drawing criticism and call for a boycott from a lot of Mormons.

The LDS statement said that, despite assurances three years ago from HBO and the creators of "Big Love" that the show was not about Mormons, Mormon themes and increasingly unsympathetic characters were being woven into the show.
I don't know if this is accurate representation of HBO's assurances, but it sounds misleading on somebody's part. The characters on the show might be not be considered members in good standing in the LDS church--they'd be more like heretics or excommunicates (if their polygamy were publically know)--but characters certainly consider themselves Mormons, following the revelations handed down by the prophet but abandoned by the church leadership.

I think the LDS church had the right idea: ignore it and it will go away. Boycott it and you draw a lot of attention to a "relatively" obscure -- and unviewed -- HBO series.

I admit that I watch it, though.
