Carlos Giron enters the Hot Seat today.

The 33-year-old golf caddy from Sandy Springs seems an unlikely contender for a millionaire quiz show. Giron says he’s no genius and all he knows is movies. In fact, that’s how he learned English as a child. (His mother is from Ecuador, and his father is from Guatemala.)

Lucky for him, this week’s theme on the show is movies.

Our Atlanta newspaper has been downsizing left and right (everything except the price which was upsized from 50 to 75 cents, not surprisingly just before they began the downsizing). In addition to staff cuts, cutting hours, and cutting their area to which they will deliver, they keep cutting down the size of the paper.

Today marked the first day without a business section. Instead, the business section now takes up three pages in the front section of the paper. The entire sports section has been cut to four pages (good luck finding a college basketball score unless it's a top 20 team). I even have to go online to find out the college baseball scores and the complete results of golf tournaments and auto races. The comics have been cut to one page which is virtually impossible for an adult to read. There is considerably more white space in the margins around the pages than there used to be. Next Sunday, the Arts, Living, and Travel sections will be merged into one section, and the TV magazine will be gone, replaced with a couple of pages of listings for the week.

But they have time (and space) to print an article about this contestant and to mention it as their daily teaser above the masthead with a promise of a bigger article tomorrow to report on how the guy did.

Are you criticizing the paper for bringing a local contestant's appearance to his neighbor's attention?

It's not like this is such a commonplace occurance as in Where Else.

It's bothersome that for a newspaper that never bothered with reporting about dozens of local contestants during the PT and Syndie runs until now, they are playing up this guy's appearance like it's the first time anyone from the Atlanta area has ever been on the show. And at a time when the total amount of space available for stories of any kind in the paper continues to shrink day by day.

At least I can get through the paper a lot quicker every day now.

They've corrected their previous neglect of legitimate local interest stories. That's a good thing!
