#1 Post by BBTranscriptTeam » Thu Mar 05, 2009 8:45 pm

Joanna Pergande
Leavenworth, KS
Office assistant

While in New York, Joanna and her mom, Cathy, ran into Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt at a movie premiere. They also went on a bicycle tour around Central Park.

Question Topics:
* Seeing Double
* You Said It!
* Electoral Votes
* Out in Space
* April Come She Will
* Heart-Shaped Box
* Bourne Again
* Painting.org
* (Roman Numerals)
* (Claymation)
* (No Bones About It)
* (Just My Type)
* (Restrooms In Use)
* (Day Jobs)
* (Chow Down!)

Joanna still has all her lifelines, including the ATE. Today's expert is $500,000 winner (and Bored Buddy) Jeff Gross.

$8,000 * Painting.org
Which of the following is a Web site with a single function: to create splatter paintings using the mouse of a computer?

A: andywarhol.org B: normanrockwell.org
C: jacksonpollock.org D: pablopicasso.org
Answer
jacksonpollock.org ( 15 )
$16,000 * Bourne Again
Which of these nouns does not appear in the title of any film into the blockbuster "Bourne" franchise starring Matt Damon?

A: Confederacy B: Ultimatum
C: Identity D: Supremacy
Answer
A: Confederacy ( 17 )
$25,000 * Heart-Shaped Box
According to legend, which of these authors wrapped up her dead husband's heart and kept it for almost thirty years?

A: Edith Wharton B: Mary Shelley
C: George Elliot D: Charlotte Brontë

With 14 seconds left, Joanna decides to Ask The Audience.

ATA: A: 4% B: 68% C: 6% D: 22%
Answer
B: Mary Shelley ( 8 )
$50,000 * April Come She Will
Which of these major historical events did not take place during the month of April?

A: Paul Revere's ride B: Sinking of the Titanic
C: Bay of Pigs Invasion D: Fall of the Berlin Wall

With 34 seconds left, Joanna decides to Phone A Friend.

Joanna's PAF team are her uncle, Ken, Broadview Heights, OH; her brother, Mike, Lawrence, KS; and her friend, Mike. Joanna decides to call Uncle Ken.

Joanna [after reading the Q&A]: I know it's not sinking of the Titanic. What do you think?

Ken: Paul Revere, Titanic?

Joanna: Yes. Bay of Pigs.

Ken: Bay of Pigs.

Joanna: Fall of the Berlin Wall.

Ken: Ohhh. I don't have any idea.

Meredith reminds Joanna she still has two lifelines.

With 16 seconds left, Joanna decides to Ask The Expert. Meredith asks Jeff if he's feeling smart and Jeff replies that he's feeling way smart, today.

Jeff: The is a tough question. The only one that I know for sure did take place during April is the Bay of Pigs.

Joanna: You know it took place in April?

Jeff: I'm pretty sure.

Joanna: OK, I know the sinking of the Titanic did, for sure.

Jeff: Well, then I think, uhh-- Bboy. I gotta tell ya, Joanna, I think I'm only about 70-80% sure about April and the Bay of Pigs, but I seem to remember it being that month. Ummm, if you trust me and want to go for your best chance, I'd take your Double Dip and go for the other two, A or D. That's what I would try.

Joanna: That's what I was thinking when you said C.

Jeff: Yeah, I'm hoping I can help you. Like I said, I'm not 100% sure but that's the only one that strikes me as having happened in April.

With 15 seconds left, Joanna decides to Double Dip.

Answer
Joanna's first answer is D: Fall of the Berlin Wall.

D: Fall of the Berlin Wall ( 15 )
-- Commercial Break --

Joanna is 24 years old and says she's going through her quarter-life crisis. She graduated from college then went to teach English in Spain for two years. So, coming back she had to start from scratch and find a job. She's living with her parents, now. This money will help her find her own place.

$100,000 * Out in Space
According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, approximately how many active man-made satellites are currently in orbit around the Earth?

A: 900 B: 1,900
C: 2,900 D: 3,900

Joanna says that "active" is the key word. She knows there's a lot of satellites, but she doesn't know how many active ones there are. She walks away with $50,000. She would have guessed D.
Answer
A: 900 ( 0 )

This question was inadvertently made more timely by the recent collision of one of the Iridium satellites with that Russian one, but that just highlights how unimportant the "active" keyword is, regarding the issue that would worry the Union of Concerned Scientists. There are many times that amount of space junk up there!

Despite Joanna's disparagement of her celebrity sighting, Meredith keeps bringing it up.

Answer

Splatter painting = Pollock. Not only that but it seems that on both BAM and J! Pollock is used as an answer/question a lot.
BBTranscriptTeam wrote:$16,000 * Bourne Again

I haven't seen any of the movies but my sons have and I've heard enough about them to know the answer.

This is one of those times when the ATA got lucky - I suspect the choice was based on the association of Shelley with Frankenstein rather than actual knowledge.

D: Fall of the Berlin Wall ( 15 )
I'd have gone straight to Double Dip. I know that Paul Revere's ride was in April ("...on the 18th of April in '75...") and the Titanic sunk in April (April 15). So I'd have made C and D my final answers.

Time for a lifeline - too bad the astrophysicist isn't still available. My first thought was it was 3900. But since I don't know for sure, it's time to use a lifeline. This might be a hard Google but I'd be calling a Google PAF.

I think you're right. I was shocked when the correct answer had such a landslide vote.

It is the reason why "about 1000" was stuck in my head.

I am surprised that neither the contestant or "Expert" remembered that the Berlin Wall fell in November 1989, seeing how it is the most current of the historical events given.

Interesting. I posted about this site several weeks ago. It really does make some cool images. At least I liked the ones I made with it.

I would have been curious to know if he would have gotten it as well. Surprisingly not that hard a google thanks to the recent "space crash" but definitely seems a Gastonia-ish question to me were it not for that crash which makes it more current events. You would have to not only recall the crash but recall the figures being used for totals of satellites. More difficult than a lot of past million dollar questions.

I agree that the Frankenstein aspect is why B got such a large vote from the audience. But, there's another clue which suggests that Mary Shelley was the right answer. Percy Shelley died young, at around age 30. That young death enabled Mary Shelley to keep his heart that way for 30 years.

Here's an article about Joanna's appearance. She had to share the article with someone else who was on TPIR.

Yay!

$50K: I can eliminate the Titanic, but that's it. I have to Phone-A-Friend.

$100K: I would've been out at this question. I would've Double Dipped on C and D.

Are the Q writers getting soft? As the ATA shows, this is an obvious guess and a prime candidate to be dismissed as a distractor, especially with a spike from D. Bronte above the remaining two answers. I think "according to legend'" is a key phrase here. The fact that it may be all made up points towards Shelley. But if I don't pull the trigger before asking the audience, I'm probably burning another LL for verification.

So why do at least 1 in 5 say Bronte? Is it just that they've heard of Bronte and not the others or are they thinking that Bronte seems like a more romantic author than the others and as such would be more inclined to keep her husband's ticker??? :shock:
