WWTBAM Bored

Dub went in yesterday with a huge bladder stone. They were going to do surgery today, despite NewVet's cautions that he will eventually go into acute renal failure. I said he has been in early renal failure for months, and could be there for months more, or years. She was juggling cost considerations, which are not relevant for a 15-year-old member of the family. She is brandnew out of school, and needs to learn more about how this stuff works....I guess she also thought surgery might damage his remaining good kidney, which was relevant. I said if he died on the table, it was his time. But she let us talk to him, and he said he is not at all ready to go yet.

That was all yesterday.

Now, they just called with great news.

I had asked them to X-ray again before they started, to be sure he did not pass the bladder stone overnight, AND HE DID! They cannot find it on the X-ray, and it was big yesterday.

No surgery. He did this once before, passed a stone overnight. He had an emergency surgery years ago to remove his boyhooter, and widen his urethra, so he can pass very big stones.

His right kidney is still shutting down, but that's been true for months, and his left kidney is going fine. As long as that side doesn't get blocked up, we are good to go for a while.

He is spitting and giving them dirty looks, even coming up from the sedation. We can pick him up in a few hours once it wears off.

We will switch to a gravied food, comes in pouches rather than cans, but moister than the crunchies. Might help keep things moving, and keep crystals and stones from forming.

I love great news! I hope Dub gets the chance today to give one last Pfffft to the new vet.

This is absolutely wonderful.

I have long wondered (since I'm now on my 2nd boy-cat) how the heck you get a male cat with kidney stones to drink lots of water. Its hard enough to get male humans with kidney stones (I'm related to one) to drink the lots of water, & you can speak to the humans in words they supposedly understand, & everything. The male humans don't understand "lay off the Pepsi", for instance, even when said in plain English, just like that. (At least with cats, you don't have to worry about the Pepsi).

Glad to hear good news about Dub.

Our Norman had that same emergency surgery when he was a youngster.

He, too, lived many happy years afterward with one good kidney.

Wonderful news.

I understand why he's hostile towards vets, though, after reading about his prior surgery. Even Bruce's vet didn't do that to him!

I am very glad that Dub is doing ok!

Lucy is on a prescription diet. I think that it's Hills Science Diet C/D, it's supposed to reduce the number of stones that form in her kidneys.

The water fountain does the trick. Drinkwell, about $40.

We did make him stop drinking iced tea, along with roomie, who also gets kidney stones.
