Gumbel

Since I have DirecTV, I happen to have the NFL Network, so I was able to watch the Cowboys-Packers game last night. The good news is, we are 11-1 and in the driver's seat for home field advantage in the NFC playoffs.

But can someone please tell me how Bryant Gumbel got a job calling play by play? He is terrible. I remember watching him when he hosted the NFL Live desk for NBC, and he was tolerable then. I never watch the Today Show, so I can't judge him from that. I couldn't stand watching his HBO stuff just because of his air of self-importance (something he seems to share with Bob Costas). But his play-by-play work on the NFL Network is just awful. His voice is not good for that sort of thing, and most of the time, he doesn't seem to know what he's talking about. Is it just me? Is my general dislike of him affecting my judgement of his play-by-play work, or does he really suck that badly?

I went out last night so I could watch the game. I agree with you of Gumble.

But the thing that struck me was night was the commercial for Heart Stents? Heart Stents! First ED now Stents, what next? I guess boomers rule!.

Bryant? Or Greg? Both of them started out as sportscasters, but Greg stuck with it.

My only guess is that the talent has gotten very diluted by the glut of channels doing sports now, so he was probably the best they could get that they would be assured of being a "company man."

When I first saw the thread, I thought someone was purposely typoing Marley's trademarked phrase, so they could use it without infringement.

Cause we worry about that sort of thing here.

Add me to the list that agrees he is a horrible play-by-play guy.

It's funny, because I noticed the name in the list of posters browsing this forum, and thought that the l's on mrkelley look awfully odd and familiar....

No Bored masked the difference between a big I and a small l the way the old PRoG did. That's the reason the first three MM's I ever registered were the 3 I/l variations of my handle....

Well no, not for all of us. I noticed that this was a different profile posting but not sure I know the bored definition of an "imp".

Actually, I am pretty sure I don't know...

Care to elaborate?

Somebody posted a reply in this thread using a handle replacing the "Ls" in my handle with square brackets, i.e., mrke][ey23. With the font this bored uses, it resembles my real handle, if you don't look too closely.

On a previous Bored, we had some major problems with people impersonating other people's handles this way, hence the term "imp."

I confess.

I imped mrkelley.

It was a cheap laugh. I chuckled. Not mightily.

Don't wanna get the imp wars started again.

I would apologize, but I'm not really sorry.

If you look again, those are vertical lines, not brackets.

PS: How can you stay mad at this avatar?

Just totally hilarious. :P

I add my vote. Bryant Gumbel is awful. He has to be the most boring sounding announcer I've ever heard. He also messes up the play-by-play and half the time doesn't know the rules. He does one of the worst things to me which is to use what are football terms with accepted meanings but in the wrong context. He will say a team "turned the ball over on downs" when he means that they have to kick it away. The first time I heard that I thought that I had missed a play and the team had failed on 4th down. And he keeps saying it. He is the worst.

And I get to listen to a lot of really bad announcers by watching soccer. We generally get the bottom of the barrel guys and Bryant Gumbel is worse than all of them.

It won't be a problem here. Any Moderator can ascertain with relative ease and high confidence the likely "true" Bored identity of an imp, by checking the IP address (I suppose this could be evaded by someone going to the trouble of posting from a different location). So there's no real anonymity. --Bob

YES. Exactly.

And his voice is not good for it. It's like Kermit the Frog is calling an NFL game. You get accustomed to lower pitched voices for play by play because it is the good voice guys who gravitate towards play by play.

I will be brief:

Bryant Gumbel achieves a incredibly high degree of play-by-play suckitude.

Anonymous imping is somewhere between very difficult and virtually impossible on this Bored.

Thank you, that is all.

Ok so I sort of have a story to go along with this.

I have DirecTV, but one of my besties/classmate/fellow teacher/fellow 'Boys lover has cable. We had just finished our 20-page action research proposal and project so we kind of wanted to get out. Our class ended at 6:30 so I headed to Buffalo Wild Wings straight afterwards to get us a table. BWW is our normal hangout to watch Cowboys games. Well needless to say, most everyone else had that idea. No seats available. So I call my friend and she says, "Well what about this place downtown." I said that it was cool to go check it out and see. It wouldn't hurt.
Before we got there, I kind of knew what I should expect. Let's just I would stick out; whereas, my friend would fit right in. So she gets there and asks me several more times if I'm ok with it. I'm like, "Gurl, it's all good." They had 3 projector screens and 4 flat panel TVs. The closer the game, the louder it got. There would be no way of hearing any commentary at all.
Oh and my friend got her food order. I did not. LOL She wanted to say something to them, but I was like, "Listen, I don't want to say anything or have it seem like I'm causing a scene. I haven't paid for it so it really doesn't matter." I'm cool. It was an interesting kind of wake-up call for me.

Oh and how this relates to this thread, I have no idea how Gumbel did cause I couldn't hear anything but profanity, commentary for those that "used to play the game", and yelling at the screens.

If it's discrimination you shouldn't have tolerated it. If it's bad service, you shouldn't have tolerated it...Either way you should have told the manager.

You were the only Cowboy fan?
Well there were several Packer fans around me. PSM called it. I was one of two white girls there. My friend and I were joking around that the other white girl kept giving me the GTH look. It wasn't bad; it was just different.

Last year, the 49ers were running the ball, and Gumbel announced it as "Carrying is Al Gore for a gain of 3".

Not once, but several times (at least the "Al" part).

I went to a local watering hole to watch it. Cowboy fans dressed in uniform. Packer fans went incognito.

This made me laugh. This post is from a local message board:
But the NFL Channel's broadcast was the suckiest bunch of sucktastic suckage I've ever been subjected to in an NFL broadcast. Greg Gumbel sounds just like his brother, except that he puts me to sleep instead of making me want to punch his face. I guess that's a good thing.

Seriously, I've heard the morning farm report delivered with more enthusiasm.

The reason "Greg Gumbel" sounded just like his brother is because that was his brother. Greg Gumbel I can stand, but Bryant Gumbel is just awful.
