It's all to generate more publicity for "El Rushbo". He knows that Obama won't do it and Rush can use that to claim that Obama is afraid of him, or that he can't be trusted without being surrounded by advisors, etc.

Obama may not be debating him formally but he's spending a lot of time through his surrogates debating Rush.

By even allowing Rush to be a part of the Presidential discussion, he is lowering himself to Rush's level.

Obama should be trying to get the country back on its financial feet, not offering the Republican party advice about Rush Limbaugh.

At 538 there's been a recurrent theme that engagement of Rush (though at the level of mentioning him they've been doing, not by debating him) is very deliberate on the part of the administration. The more Rush is held up as the de facto spokesperson for the Republican Party and conservative movement, the more middle-of-the-roaders are going to be supportive of the administration, and maybe the more likely it makes the very few swing senators more likely to vote with them.

I was thinking the exact same thing.

What's funny (and sad) is that Rush is smart enough to know him being mentioned like this is actually bad for the conservative movement, but he's doing it anyway because Rush is about one thing and only one thing- Rush. But at the same time he'll snow his listening audience into thinking he's "fighting for the conservativr cause" and keep them all riled up and angry.

Why would Obama do it? He would have nothing to gain. He would not be able to convince Rush or his listeners that his vision is right for America. And Rush would not be able to convince him that his policies and direction are wrong for America. But, I think it would be a fascinating debate, though.
