Job prospects for elwing don't look promising at the moment, so we sat down last night and did some serious analysis of our income and expenses. It's not time to panic yet, but it is time to start thinking about what happens when her unemployement benefits run out. It will be tight but we can survive for a while on one salary, but it will require sacrificing a lot. elwing is traveling to Indianapolis today for an interview with one of the cruise lines - she would like to either drive a tour bus on the Alaska tours or possibly be a guide (though those jobs seem to be reserved for college students). The down side is that she would be away from home for about five months. But we figure that we can handle the separation if she gets the opportunity.
On a different subject, there's a chance that I'll be in Denver the week of April 6. There's a DoD eBusiness conference there (it's an annual event that I normally attend) and I've requested permission to go. My boss is concerned about workload - that's right about the time that the first stimulus money is expected to arrive.

An Alaska tour guide? Don't those jobs usually go to Alaskans?

Not at all - when we took our cruise/bus tour the tour guide was a college student from Washington. Evidently they provide training so that the guides know Alaska history and stuff like that.

Is her health up to that job? I seem to think she has some health issues.
Hope it all works out for her and for you as a couple.

Actually she's in good shape considering she hadn't seen a doctor in several years. Even though she was covered under my health insurance she "didn't want to take time off" (unpaid) for a doctor visit. Now that she is unemployed, she took the time to do all the things she should have done years ago, and everything checked out all right.

I must have her confused with someone else's wife.
Glad to hear she is healthy and strong.

One visitor-oriented outfit around here lists the home towns underneath the names on the name tags. A Colorado home town is rare.
