RIP Rocky Mountain News

#1 Post by gotribego26 » Thu Feb 26, 2009 1:23 pm

"The Rocky" to publish final edition on Friday. 150 year old daily to be closed by Scripps.

The first of many I fear. I enjoyed having the Rocky and the Post when I lived in Denver.

How many people here live in a more-than-one-daily-newspaper town/metro area?

New York City's been holding at 3 for sometime, and it's beginning to look like the Post is in trouble.
I am about 25% sure of this.

Our local local paper went under.

The Poughtown Journal is still printing.

I wonder for how long.

Boston still has two. Since they represent opposite ends of the political spectrum, I suspect their owners will keep them around as long as possible just to spite the other one.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

The Rocky's been on the rocks for a long time. It went up for sale last year, but the only news there was how there wasn't a buyer.

The local garbagewrapper cut way back -- fewer pages and features, a squished TV guide, and horrible editing, almost to the point where I'm ready to accuse them of illiteracy. OK, not quite that bad, but you'd think a newspaper reporter would know the difference among cite-site-sight and write-right-rite. Sigh.

The company that runs both Philly dailies filed for Chapter 11 early Monday morning. They say they are making an operating profit but needed to restructure debt.

Four newspapers here, and I can't imagine it going lower.

The Gazette, La Presse, Journal de Montréal, Le Devoir.

Devoir is only one which never makes a profit, but it is supported as a cultural icon (by its parent company IIRC).

Some here in LA are forecasting doom and gloom for the Times.
I believe in the usefulness of useless information.

It's ironic that to respond, I had to click on "POST REPLY."

Why did the Rocky fold, rather than the Post? I've visited the Denver/Boulder area scores of times, and whenever I bought a newspaper to read on the plane, I'd always choose the Rocky, since its tabloid format made it easier to read on the plane. I'm sorry to see it fold, and to see the struggle for survival that so many newspapers are facing.

"Word on the street" is that the Denver Post had better bean counters -- better managers in terms of keeping subscribers and advertisers happy and in being able to weather lean times because of good practices in good times. We'll see what they come up with now when the entire institution as we know it is threatened.

The Rocky was clearly the 2nd paper when I lived there. The Post had more "gravitas" - I think the tabloid format influenced that some. The JOA was created to save the Rocky. The Post benefitted, but didn't need it.

I thought the cover was well done
