On the road again

Posting just before I power off my desktop and have it loaded into my SUV. I'll be able to use my notebook PC when I'm in range of WiFi or a cell tower. I'm not up here.
I'm not sure where I'm going tomorrow. I have a phone interview at 9 AM for the job in South Carolina. If they hire me on the spot and want me down there soon, I'll drive down there over the weekend. Otherwise I'll be driving to Denver to see my family. I use to love driving but now that I'm arthritic I hate it.
I hired two guys to load the PODS. I've done just a little lifting and carrying today and feel like if I do any more I'll wind up in the hospital. Boy do I hate moving!
I also hate not knowing where I'm going or much anything else about my future plans. I realize there are whole families in the same boat but that doesn't make be feel any better.
At least I have a skill that pays top dollar. Problem is that maybe 1000 people like me are needed in this country. Yes, I could do some lesser computer job but no one's going to hire me because I haven't done that sort of work in over 30 years. My only choice is to wait for one of those 1000 jobs. Good thing I have enough liquidity to hold out for many months.
So anyway, I'm going to be visiting the Bored much less than I have been for awhile, but will be around some - so behave!
Good luck to you all.

Good luck, Bob!
I'd hate the idea of packing all of my stuff and essentially becoming a migrant worker without any clear idea where I'd end up. I suppose you'd rather not make your daughter's place in Denver your temporary home base?

I did that for 12 years from 1991 to 2002. I had some great adventures but am too damn old and arthritic for that now.
If I used my daughter's place as a base, my furniture, electronics, etc. would be destroyed within a week. My two great-grandchildren who are walking would ensure that.

I'll visit her if I don't get hired tomorrow morning and drive south instead of west. I'll be staying in a hotel.
I have my second interview with CSC in Columbia, SC at 9 AM tomorrow. Crossed appendages are appreciated.

I just had a great interview with CSC for the South Carolina job. They won't be making a decision until next week or the following one so I'm heading to Denver via I-80. If you see a green Explorer, wave.

Here's hoping you have to turn around and go east again, real soon!
Isn't I-80 a long way out of the way from SC? Or was that a phone interview?

Why so far out of the way?

Good luck!!! I'm eager to hear about your travels and experiences, even though we are not in the same field, if you can find a job this way, it will provide inspiration for me!!

Good luck, &, as has already been wished, safe landing.
My sister's ex-boyfriend who had for a long time one of those "only one of the few in the country who can do this" programming jobs (the country in this case was Germany) also got laid off recently. And, predictably, hired back by various entities, including the previous long-time employer, as a consultant. Without the considerable benefits, but as all say "its a job!".

Well yeah, but if I get the job I probably won't start for two weeks. That gives me time to see the great-granddaughters I've seen only on webcam.
I-80 and I-70 are almost exactly the same length drive from New Jersey. I took a look at the weather forecast predicting snow in the Midwest tomorrow and decided to take I-70 instead.
Snow in Charlotte, Atlanta and Birmingham?! Sheesh!
I've stopped for the night in Washington, PA. I got a late start then had rain for the last four hours. I ache from packing and driving. I think a hot bath after dinner will be in order.

See the above reply. Use Google maps if you don't believe me: Morristown, NJ to Denver.

I'm not on the road to find a job. I'm taking a vacation before I start a new one. My lease was up so I was going to move out anyway.
Most jobs I've gotten recently have been from networking or from people knowing my reputation. The CSC manager has read my computer-related postings.
I find more computer jobs on DICE.com than anywhere else. Monster.com has comparatively few. Computerjobs.com has almost nothing nowadays.
You should find more jobs on Monster.com.

Consulting is rebounding due to the economy. However at this time I'm being considered for more "permanent" jobs than contract jobs.

Did you stay in South Carolina tonight, or did you head out west already?
The weather this direction is frightful for sure. It will clear up in a day or two though.
Drive carefully and be safe!

Minty Man and I both thought you had driven to South Carolina for the interview. If you were driving from NJ today, apparently that's not the case. I wouldn't have bothered questioning the I-80 vs I-70 choice from NJ.
But driving all day through the rain is certainly lousy. Best wishes for clearer weather on the rest of the trip.

My interview for the South Carolina job was on the phone. I drove (just) from home to Washington, PA today.
Thanks!

Thanks, but I may be driving though (hopefully) light snow tomorrow.

You must have missed that I had my household goods packed into a PODS yesterday.
Actually both the guys I interviewed with were not in South Carolina. This job with CSC would be like with Citi: people on the same team dispersed all over the world. I'd be working in South Carolina at what they call the "onshore data center".

Good news. the Pittsburgh 11:00 news says the snow will be south of I-70. I may make it to St. Louis.

The Weather Channel mentioned there's two inches of snow in Kansas City already so I guess there's going to snow long I-70.

They're talking about just the tornado now so I don't know what the forecast is for Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.

If you see Jim Cantore hitchhiking on the interstate head for shelter.

The surface chart still looks clear to St. Louis, but there's certainly a lot of precipitation (of various kinds) to the south!
