Admittedly I wasn't a big fan, and I disagreed with many of his public stances, but I certainly can't hold that against him beyond the veil.

I worked on Capitol Hill for ten years and had the pleasure of meeting Henry Hyde on a number of occasions.

I never met a kinder, more down-to-earth Member of Congress in all my years there.

I have heard Henry Hyde described as "old-fashioned, but a real gentleman." Thank you, Fishie, for reminding us that it is possible to disagree with someone's political beliefs without casting him (or her) in the role of villain.

I'll tell you how dumb I was. I went out on a limb right before the Judiciary Committee's vote on the impeachment articles with a prediction that Hyde would shock everybody by voting "no" (and thereby lead others away from the hysteria).

I based that prediction on all of the stuff that everybody kept saying about his character and intelligence and depth and honor and what not. That would have been a big boost to our then-struggling Prediction Services division. Needless to say, I was very disappointed on many fronts that he didn't live up to his billing.

I don't judge a person by their politics at all, and I'm sure that he was a great guy in many respects. Still, I do not have a soft spot in my heart for him. I've always considered that he sold out, and the link that nitrah posted kind of confirms that.

For some reason I used to be able to do a pretty good impression of him, but I can't hear his voice in my head well enough to do it now. Fine with me.

This is one of the reasons I don't read political blogs. The after-article comments made by these "people" are worse than ignorant and insulting. They are comments that would have been harsh even if they applied to Ted Bundy or Jim Jones. I would be embarrassed to be the author of that article and see my "brethren" hurl invective like that. I hope nobody here was part of that.

So you have political differences with somebody. Celebration of a death because of that is beyond the pale. Should Bill Clinton die before I do (and given my recent trip to the emergency room, that's not a given), I would not only refrain from making public pronouncements 1/10ths as vitriolic as what I just read, I'd like to think I would call out those that do. It reminds me why I have separated from politics as much as I have in the last few years/months.

Just for the record, I didn't (and don't) read after-article comments for pretty much the same reason as starfish. The information in the article itself I thought worth passing along.
