WWTBAM Bored

So for a multitude of reasons, I am seriously thinking of moving to a warmer location. I just contacted my realtor and my condo will probably be going on the market this week.

It is a semi bad time to leave (family illness and all) but all my life I have been making choices to make other people happy. Now, I feel nothing is holding me here...no boyfriend, no kids, friends are becoming distant and wrapped up with their lives, job is good but not great...and it's so frenchin' cold here! I never explored other places for college, during college or after college like I probably should have...so now I'm going to have my not-really-mid life crisis and do it now!

Suggestions welcome, especially if you know anywhere I can find a job.............

I have a vacant lot next door now that's probably selling cheap....

The real estate is going cheap in Phoenix and Vegas, but I don't know what's up with the job markets in either place.

I've spent my whole life on the East Coast, so I don't know how I'd deal with a lack of humidity, though.

I have to worry about schools on top of everything else, so I'm staying put but eyeing markets for retirement places, with the caveat that Erin is a mere 4 years old, so retiring is quite a ways off, or schools will continue to be important for over a decade....

I'm sorry, Sunny, but I've forgotten what you do for a living. Could you remind me?

I am an internal auditor. But I have an MBA in finance and a brief stint as a manager of finance at an insurance company, so I have potential for internal audit, consulting, financial type roles, fraud investigator, or other similar positions. I just can't do external audit/accounting because I don't have a CPA, just a CIA.

That's why I feel like I should go now. No worry about schools, just if I can find a suitable place and a decent job. It doesn't even have to be as good a job as I have here. And some day I do hope to have kids, but you figure I have 4 or 5 years from the day they're born to find a good place with good schools, so I think I have enough time.

I think Phoenix might have some good jobs. I also think I'd rather stay within closer proximity to a coast. I don't care which one, but I think I'd miss the ocean.

Well, I have lived in New York, Vegas, South Carolina and, now, Iowa. NY and Iowa would definitely be out if you are looking for warmer climes. The Vegas / Phoenix area is OK but it gets really, REALLY HOT from May to September. Between the heat and lack of humidity, it takes a while to adjust. I hear that Vegas is suffering from high UN-employment right now so this is something you might want to consider if you were considering Vegas. I'm not sure what the housing or job markets are in the Phoenix area. I really enjoyed living in SoCar. The summers were not brutally hot (although they are humid) like Vegas and the winters are not as cold as it gets where you currently live. You might look into the Columbia or Charleston areas if you are considering the South. I hear the Richmond, Va. area is nice as well. Have fun relocating.

I love Atlanta, and that's where I'd be if I was single/childfree. Housing is affordable, beaches are a not-to-distant drive away, and there are loads of things to do.

Vegas is hurting right now. I'd suggest Honolulu. Perfect weather 24/7/365.

Nothing like Miami Beach for mental peace and housing not so expensive in the northern parts...

Honolulu would be awesome. I always imagined it being expensive though!!

In my mind, my top choices are (in no particular order): NC, SC, GA - Atlanta or Savannah areas, FL, CA - San Diego or San Fran, Hawaii or St Thomas.

Then Vegas and Phoenix were suggested, and also made me think of TX.

That's why i'm looking for other ideas, areas I might have missed. Or someone to tell me I'm totally crazy!!!

Yes - I love that about Atlanta, I definitely want somewhere where there is a lot to do, and I can be outside almost year round.

I think I would do the job search first, then move.

Just think it through before you leap. This economy may not be the best one to make a big decision on a whim. I don't think this is a whim, I know you are ging through a bunch of stuff. I just think I would do the job search part first. It would also give you a chance to visit places and check them out.

There's two units vacant in our condo (which only has four total units in the building).

I'm glad you put CA on your list. As I type this on my razzberry I am sitting in a golf cart taking pictures of golfers. It is 8:30 in the morning and the skies are blue and it's about 70 degrees. Why would anyone want to live anywhere else.
That being said, I hear there are great deals in the housing market in Vegas.

I agree with you. Step 1 is selling my condo, I think I will do that either way - it's too small and I can rent or buy something else relatively cheap.

Then when that is done, I figure out where I want to go, I was just telling one of my friends, the job will dictate where I go and not the other way around. But I do want to narrow it down to favorable climates, with lots of stuff to do, where I can meet new people.

It is partly a whim, so you are okay saying that...but it's also a moment of clarity that I have always lived my life for others, and I will do it until the day I die unless I stop myself. I'm not happy doing it, but they all let me do it. So I just need some independence to figure out what I want. If that makes sense.

I think skoop could offer insight into the job market and housing situation in NC.

I think the Hard Rock theme park in Myrtle Beach will be hiring soon


(this is not a serious suggestion, The Hard Rock went broke last summer and they are trying to reopen it with new investors)
