Trying not to explode

I am sick. Not too sick to work, but too sick to be in a good mood. Conjunctivitis combined with Satan's own head cold.

Frankie had a babysitter today. Mommy picked him up and he fell asleep in the car on the way home. Frankie will take ONE afternoon nap. Mommy did a great job of getting his sleeping lifeless body out of the car without waking him up. And then some neighborhood kid screamed about 4 feet away from them and he was awake. Mommy spent 90 minutes trying to get him back to sleep with no success. He's now acting like a one-year-old who desperately needs a nap and refuses to take one.

Next-door neighbor called - she's in labor and needs us to take care of her 3-year-old for the evening. Mommy goes to daycare to pick her up. Frankie screams the entire time because Mommy's gone. (Couldn't bring him with; we only have one carseat). Kathryn understands how to share, but of course Frankie doesn't. She just wants to play with one ANYTHING for more than a minute, but as soon as she picks anything up, that's what Frankie wants. Lots of screaming ensues, and foot stamping and everything else. Downstairs neighbor (the evil witch) is pounding on her ceiling / our floor with a broom.

Mrs. Fly is obviously a saint and doing her best to keep everyone happy. Meanwhile I'm miserable and not done with work and I can't help out because I'm contagious as hell.

Oh, thank God. There in the bath together. Screaming-loud-and-happy is way better than screaming-loud-and-pissed-off. Kathryn wears the same size diapers as Frankie. Bedtime will be awful, but hopefully short. Kathryn is scandalized that Frankie has a later bedtime than she does. Though probably not tonight. I think I will be watching Kathryn from afar while Mommy puts Frankie down to sleep.

Good luck. I hope they are both sleeping now and mom is resting in a nice comfortable chair.
She is a saint. :D

Thanks. Just needed to vent. They are both asleep. We had time to watch Chuck. It turned out to be a good night. Now if I could just stop coughing and wanting to rub my eyes.

This is even worse than that Job From Hell, although that lasted a lot longer.

SteelersFan had that too! The doc was convinced that he had an allergic reaction to cause the redness and swelling in his eyes. He comes in contact with dozens of people in his job every day, so it's very possible you two have the same thing. He couldn't work Thursday because his eyes were swollen shut, and he's finally back to normal today.

Anyway, hope you feel better soon.

Thanks. Frankie's (where else do you think I got it?) eyes have been clear since mid-last-week, and he hasn't needed drops since Saturday. But everytime I bring him into the changing room he pitches a fit because he's afraid of getting eyedrops again.

And of course I'm a damn hypocrite - I hate them too. And I miss my own eyes. A lot. Not in the "I wish I could see" sense, but in the "I can never tell when the dropper is precisely above them, so I hit my cheek" sense. So I dread the drops almost as much as Frankie did. Makes me feel even guiltier for holding his eyes open and his arms down as he yelled.

Our family pediatrician told us that if the child's eyes are closed, you can put 1 drop in the corner of the eye, while they're lying down, and when they open them, it will fall into the eye. It seemed to work OK if the girls would lie still. It may work for adults as well.

Rexer's right. This works for both children and adults. Just put the drop in the corner of the eye on the inside of the lower eyelid; you need to pull it down just a very little bit. As soon as you blink a few times, the medicine is distributed over your eye.

I forgot the best part -- when it's for yourself, you do it while you're looking in the mirror. So you never medicate your cheek instead of your eye. :D

What kind of drops? Antibiotic perhaps? Should be real helpful for what is most likely a viral infection!

So don't worry too much if you don't get them all in...

I believe it is antibiotic. The doc said on Friday that if the liquid discharge was clear it was probably viral (i.e. wait for it to go away on its own) and if it was yellowish it was probably bacterial. By Monday morning it was yellow, so I went in and they gave me the scrip.

My eyes were all kinds of red and irritated all day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and then within hours of getting the drops they're noticeably clearer, and mostly white today.

But who knows? Could easily be the timing, my body clearing it coinciding with the drops.

Would be nice if it were that clear cut. Unfortunately it isn't as I have seen many cases of viral conjunctivitis with yellowish mucoid discharge. In fact most have that. The antibiotics likely won't hurt anything but I would not use them for an extended period of time as they can begin to cause redness and irritation of their own in most people.

Whichever it is I hope it resolves soon as I know it can be miserable!

Just found out that BD got sent home from school today with conjunctivitis as well. FWIW, the good news is that she's the teacher now! Comes from hanging out with germy little kids. The school has others to cover for her, but she got a note from the doctor to stay home tomorrow, too. The extra sleep will be good for her.

Good timing, though. She's off visiting WDW next week with her maid of honor. Look out, Magic Kingdom! The whole is definitely more than the sum of the parts when those two get together around anything Disney.

What timing! Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye!) was a clue on Jeopardy tonight. :P

I was afraid I might have it last week -- woke up with a really swollen, red left eye. It turned out to be allergy-related, though -- apparently Little John (the cat) slept on my pillow all night and I must have had a cat hair in my eye  Fortunately some Claritin and Visine cleared it up. I'm glad it wasn't the contagious kind (I remember the kids having it a couple times when they were little, but I always managed to avoid catching it.)
