I freely confess I don't understand the vagaries of gasoline prices - it's going for about $1.85 here, BTW - or why gasoline prices go up when the price of crude oil is going down. However I did hear something on NPR the other day that made some sense.

It seems that the benchmark price of crude oil is for a grade known as "West Texas Intermediate" sweet light crude. However there are other types of crude out there, including "North Sea Brent" crude oil. This second type costs more than the benchmark West Texas Intermediate and seems to be the crude of choice for North American refineries. Apparently that accounts for some of the disparities in price - WTI may go down in price but NSB could go up, so also the price of gasoline.

It's an infrastructure thing.

When our oil infrastructure was built, West Texas Intermediate typically was the more expensive crude. So it wasn't cost-effective for refiners to pipe or ship it anywhere in the US except in the environs of the refineries that refined it.

So, unfortunately, only the south-central part of the US has access to gasoline refined from WTI.

i saw 2.19 yesterday, but most are down to 1.95

soon a gallon of gas will caost more than a barrel of oil.

i would like the job to explain gas prices.

the new explanation about the Sudden change in the benchmark oil is very strong

the "tensions in the middle east"."Strikes in nigeria",retooling of refineries" guy musta retired.

It was dropped to $1.79 here yesterday, though I had a daymare this afternoon that it shot up to $6.88...

Of course, there really is no gas station on the road I was on in that dream anyway, so I feel relieved that it wasn't a premonition, like the countless times I start thinking about a song and it ends up being the next one played on the radio....

Oh it's a premonition all right.

It just won't be true until a year or so from now.

Well, if they ever build a gas station in the place it was in my dream, I'll start getting worried....

Of course, it's just a couple months away from my first KC trip of the year, which is a better indicator of soaring gas prices than any silly dream.....

$1.669 street price in Smyrna, TN yesterday (Sunday) -- about 13 cents than Nashville itself.

Take another 15 cents off for Kroger card = 1.519

Am I the winner this week?
