They do not specifically show how he gets on, but they do have a scene of others at the call center where he's a chai wallah trying to get on via a phone game. Jamal says something about the secret being to call at a certain precise time, which implied that answering three questions of increasing difficulty had nothing to do with it.

From what I gathered, it was somewhat similar to radio station contests where the winner is the first person to call after the DJ announces the contest. Because he had been watching the show a lot, he figured out exactly when the phone lines were opened, based on what the people on the set were saying and doing. The other people at his telemarketing firm ignored what he was saying. It's probably similar to the timing on Jeopardy where you have to wait about one second after Alex reads the answer before buzzing in.

It's safe to say that if the show had used either auditions or a phone trivia game, he wouldn't have gotten on the air.

And they did show other contestants sitting on the stage, so you'd presume he won a fastest finger type game...even though they didn't show it...otherwise, why would they all be sitting there?

I didn't hear about any casting call for RoF extras! I'd have been perfect in that role....
