Last of my WWTBAM winnings

Back in April 2001, after I finally got my check from Valleycrest, I put 10,000 dollars of my winnings into a variable annuity (I'll never do that again). Of course, the stock market took a dive right after that, and I think the value of the annuity went down under 6000 for awhile (but hey, if I had died, my wife could have gotten the entire 10 grand back). After spending more than I should have taking my son to Game 3 of the World Series, I took a hard look at our credit card bills. After weighing the potential returns of keeping the annuity versus paying twenty-something percent interest on the credit card balances, I pulled all the money out of the annuity. After paying all the penalties for early withdrawal, I got back 9400 dollars and put that toward the credit cards.

So, not counting the equity in the house that we bought right after getting the check, all of my winnings are gone now (but my debt is a lot lower too).

Very smart of you to consider the "negative savings" of the credit card balances! They can eat you alive...

It's much smarter to pay off your credit cards, you made a good decision.

Good decision.

I hope the salesman who sold you that annuity (and surely pocketed a nice commission) never darkens your door again.

I did pay for the viewing party and what I shared with my PaFs outta the winnings.

That was very fun.

I'm still driving my Jeopardy! winnings around town. (The part that didn't go to pay taxes, anyway.) --Bob

Most of my winnings went into my kids college accounts.

I did buy the family a big HDTV, which still works, despite the water poured on it recently.

I'm still driving a big chunk of my Millionaire winnings around town. Wherever Annie wants to go, I drive her.

I got the best prize.

Well the net of the $16,000 I had won went towards my college education.

I finally graduate with my BA in History from FIU on December 18th! :)

Thanks WWTBAM!
