If you do that, partner's going to play you for four diamonds. Also, if partner knows you've got six clubs, he also knows you've got two doubletons (or a singleton). Most importantly, you know you have the unbid suit stopped, and he doesn't. --Bob

Yeah, I have the unbid suit stopped with a doubleton. Pard and I played this hand (sorta) last week, down three in 3N. After they cleaned our clock with the KQJ and a couple of small spades, they moved on to clubs, where they were similarly situated with regard to honors. Isn't it amazing how you can stomp somebody flat with only 11 points between you, they marveled.

I'm sticking with 3D. Pard knows I'm forced and could have as few as three.

Not in my partnerships. My agreement is that one never gives an immediate raise of the second suit with less than four-card support. Partner bids 3S. --Bob

1C-1H-2C-2D, I will bid 2S and hold my breath.

Using Sprot's reply of 3D and partner bidding 3S, I will bid 4D.

I'd be proud to open this hand. Three aces and a six-card suit. I don't think anyone would fail to open this hand at any form of scoring or any vulnerability.

As the 4th suit, 2S establishes a game forcing auction and asks for a spade stopper (rather than telling partner you have one), on the theory that if you have a spade stopper, you can bid 2N yourself. Are you sure that's what you want to bid? --Bob

I'll defer to Kusch. Pard and I don't have fourth suit game-forcing in our partnership agreement. Two pairs in our club use it, both to excellent effect.

Pard's still trying to get me to alert Drury.

And more bad news!

Pard's moving to Fan's neck of the woods. He can't wait! He loves it there! I guess he must be acquainted with Fan.

I'll probably go back to playing pickup games for a while. Not nearly as much fund as developing a card, knowing what just about every bid and every played card mean. Plus help shoring up my weaknesses.

Dang you Sprots, quit deferring.

Bob, I did not say I I would not open the hand, just not my favorite because the only rebid I have is 2C. I much prefer to open a hand with 9 spades headed by the AKQ and outside AKH.

Ok, can I change my bid to 2N promising a spade stopper?

I would have gone 1c then 2c then 2nt showing a spade stopper and as balanced and as weak as I can be
