Interesting news day in CT

It started this morning with breaking news - a man with a gun locked himself in his car on I-84 in Hartford, resulting in the highway being closed in both directions for 3 hours . Swat teams, snipers, negotiators, etc were called in...it ended peacefully around noon, with the man being brought to a local hospital for evaluation.

Breaking news again this afternoon - a pet chimp attacked a woman in Stamford, and the chimp was ultimately shot and killed in some kind of police confrontation. Apparently the woman had some pretty significant injuries, and the chimp is said to be a celebrity, having been on tv at some time in the past (not sure where/when).

Just thought I'd share. :)

We put the chimp on the front page. The other thing, not so much.

This reminds me of an old George Carlin line. "A man barracaded himself inside his house today, but he is not armed and no one is paying any attention to him."

RadioDude played a little bit of the 9-1-1 call -- the caller yells "Send police with guns! . . . you have to shoot him!"

They're speculating on the reasons for the attack. The visitor completely changed her usual appearance, so the chimp may have thought he was protecting his owner from a stranger. Or, the rampage may have been triggered by Lyme disease medication.

The visitor was transported to the ER and is still in critical condition.

And that reminds me of my second favorite Carlin routine -- The Last Guy.

He pictures the "last guy," the one everybody can say "I'm better off than that guy" about, he finds a dime (long time ago . . .), and calls up and threatens the President. All the other countries say, "He's the last guy, screw him," but in the States, we send an armored car and a SWAT team . . . (I don't remember it exactly, in case you hadn't noticed...)

I heard this morning that the owner noticed some agitation in the chimp and gave it a zantax in the morning.

Yeah, but that was just ten minutes before the attack. :(

If I'm not mistaken, that 'Last Guy' routine is actually Arlo Guthrie's as part of his intro to his song The Pause of Mr. Claus. It probably holds the record for the longest intro ever to the shortest song - one of my favs and very, very funny. Interesting that you associated it with George Carlin.

So I went back and checked my first favorite George Carlin routine to make sure I wasn't misattributing that too. But no, "Have you ever noticed that anybody driving slower than you is an idiot, and anyone going faster than you is a maniac?" is still George Carlin.

"Santa Claus wears a red suit,
He's a Communist.
He has long hair and a beard,
Must be a pacifist.

What's in that pipe that he's smoking?"

Which brings us back to Carlin:
"Old King Cole was a merry old soul,
A merry old soul was he.
He called for his pipe, he called for his bowl.
I guess we all know about Old King Cole."

The Ape was always a wild animal. To try to pretend that it was human and apply human reasoning to the cause of the attack, is foolish in the extreme.

I think they were trying to apply chimp reasoning by mentioning the changed appearance of the visitor, who, if that reasoning holds, became an intruder in his home territory rather than a guest. Also, who knows if Lyme disease medication is psychosis inducing in chimps; studies are unlikely.

People want to know things that impact the health and safety of their families, and somebody tried to oblige. I see it as the same thing as pit bulls and
Rottweilers being banned in communities all over the country. Could chimps in other homes be a danger to families in the neighborhood? Could it have been prevented? Somebody tried to help answer those questions.

There was another article saying that this chimp had been grandfathered in before tough new restrictions regarding chimps in private homes were put in place. Seems that somebody knew there was a possibility of incidents like this one, but it couldn't help this case.
