Queen Bee and myself are planning our 25th wedding anniversary this October, and would like to come to NYC (we have never been). We would like to stay downtown and go see some shows. Any suggestions on hotels? things to do? etc.? BTW the hive is stable but not overproducing money, so the best and cheapest is needed.

I'd recommend a different outfit.

October is a great month to come to NY.

Use the discount web sites to find less expensive hotels.

Go to a show, stroll in Central Park, see the Statue of Liberty, go to Chinatown, do the Empire State Building, walk around Greenwich Village, ride the subway, walk through Time Square at night.

Don't stay outside the city to save money on the hotel - the real experience is being in the city.

Wear walking shoes.

Bring plenty of Ulee's Gold.

When looking for hotels, what street and or area should we be loooking at? I am a NYC virgin.

I agree with Pea on this...there are a lot of great places, but I don't know your price range. Try kayak, you'll see the range...also priceline and hotwire are good for discounts. Find some in your price range for your dates and post back, and we can weigh in. I can give you great hotels, but they could be $99 a night or $600 a night, depending when you're going and how booked they are. Better to start with actual possibilities and narrow it down from there.

t-girl and I stayed around Carnegie Hall - in the 50's between 7th and 8th. I like that location much better than staying around Time Square (the 40's between Broadway and 7th).

Have a map when you look at addresses, the east and west stuff still confuses me a bit, but with a map in front of you, you will know exactly what location you are lookig at.

Look in midtown first and then go from there.

You should check out travel sites like Expedia. They used to offer packages of hotels, and flights for cheaper than the price of a flight alone. (they throw a car rental in there, too, but you wont need it).

Wherever you stay in NYC, MY preference and suggestion is to get the highest floor of the hotel as possible. Less street noise.

(Also, I was down there last week, and walked right past the WELLMANTON hotel!!!!!... And the diner I had breakfast with Tan in next door. Ooh the memories!)

I highly recommend the Westin Times Square. Incredibly close to everything. Great bed, great shower. A bit pricey but often appears on the discount websites. We booked flight and hotel together when we went last Nov. and paid just under $900 for two round trip direct tickets on Continental and two nights in the hotel with a King sized bed on a high floor with a very cool view of midtown. Because we were very close to everything we were going to be doing for the two days, we didn't really spend any money on transportation.

For less money there are Comfort Inns that are nice. The one that I remember is up on the West side in the high 60's low 70's. I think their rates are pretty good for NYC (used to be $120's range/night but this was at least 6 years ago). And their rooms used to be clean and nice (we had some folks in who stayed there a few times when we lived in Manhattan.)

Figure out the things you're going to do and then search for a hotel deal near there. The more you travel around within the city, the more expense you add (unless you're comfortable with the subway/bus situation and most first timers are not). Sometimes the cost to get into and out of midtown via cab ends up to be about equal to the extra you would spend on a discounted rate at one of the hotels in Midtown.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was hoping to stay about 5 nights, so looking at around $150/night if possible. We love the theatre, so we are definelty going to some shows. I will start checking on some locations and then maybe get some feedback at that time.

Since he's an artist I think he's nuts. Has he cut off an ear yet?

Somebody local might suggest a hotel outside of Manhattan near enough to the subway to commute into the city and avoid the Sky high hotel rates in the City.
