Nothing plain about this plane

#1 Post by tubadave » Sun Feb 15, 2009 2:50 pm

So, my employer recently added a temporary new design to one of their planes:

They didn't ask my opinion ahead of time, but I definitely would have given my approval if they had.

And right as it reaches rotation speed at takeoff, the force of the wind rips the bikini top off.

My guess is that it is our predictability that makes us cute.

Or helps with the cuteness, at least. 8)

I'm somewhat surprised that nobody has pointed out the irony of this. Seeing as how this was the airline that kicked the woman off the plane because of her low-cut top and short skirt.

Even though I considered doing so, I'm not surprised that nobody did it. I'm sure Dave posted it in the spirit of fun and adventure, and that's how it was taken.

I do think it is ironic, but I have no problem with either action. I saw the outfit the woman was wearing, and she couldn't sit without showing too much.

And very few passengers will see the outside of the plane.

It's ironic, but not hypocritical.

I'm glad that you folks are able to recognize the lack of hypocrisy. Many are not able to do so....I've seem a lot of people, in other forums (such as the Southwest Blog) trying to call out Southwest for being hypocritical. Based on what I've heard from people who were there, that girl (Kyla was her name, IIRC) wasn't wearing anything under that extremely short skirt, and so was showing everyone around her all that she had when she sat down, reached for the overhead luggage bin, etc. Most people (including the national media during the aftermath) seem to be unaware of that.

Of course, I also recall seeing Kyla's interview on Good Morning America. At one point, after showing off her "innocent" outfit, she sat back down, and the censors felt the need to blur out anything she may or may not have been showing off. When the interview replayed on the west coast, the camera cut away entirely before it even got to that point.

At least with Bar Refaeli's picture on the side of the plane, there's nothing they'd have to blur out.

The most aesthetically pleasing lines for anything here on earth:

A beautiful woman* and a beautiful plane.

This is approaching beer commercial perfection.

Well done, SWA!

It is utterly bizarre that a massive picture of a girl in a bikini is OK, yet showing "all she had" (nice euphemism) is verboten. What a strange attitude toward the human body we have.

Not everybody is happy

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,504267,00.html
The airline has received a flood of criticism on its corporate blog about the promotion, with many passengers complaining about having to board an aircraft “covered in pornography”.

“I would not want to have to watch this plane pull up to the gate traveling with my young child, or mother, grandmother, etc.,” customer Jim Dawson said.

“I know Southwest is known for its fun, laid back qualities but this is just completely inappropriate to plaster all over the side of the plane.”
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
