My turn for a fatherly brag. Sparky has been taking sixth grade math through a Web-based course through the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. He started in October and took the final Thursday. He got 93% and an A. Not bad for the halfway point of fourth grade.
We want him to get more practice with the mechanical stuff (most of his errors were sloppy errors rather than lack of command of the material), so instead of starting him on seventh grade math, we're giving him a Problem Solving course as his next course. --Bob

Not sure what kind of math this is, but is it possible to reinforce the idea of taking an answer and plugging it back in to double-check it's correctness? This strategy doesn't seem to be emphasized as much today as it was when I last took any math courses, but it would certainly expose sloppy mistakes.

Outstanding work, Sparky!
You're saying he's completed the entire year of 6th Grade math already, not just the first semester?
So Sparky's in 4th Grade now...how would he feel about being on the cast of AYSTA5G next year?

He knows to do that, but it wouldn't have helped with most of these errors. He simply made sloppy arithmetic mistakes on problems where there was nothing to plug the answer back into. He tries to do a little too much in his head. --Bob
