Right Wing v. Conservative

They are talking about mounting primary challenges against the three moderate GOP senators who basically dictated the final terms of the bailout package...no matter that they managed to trim over $100 billion from it and focus it much more on traditional GOP objectives. As far as I am concerned, they are heroes.

I will donate $$ to any of them who may face this kind of imbecillic, knee-jerk reaction from the Rush Limbaugh Is God contingent out there.

As someone who is a life-long Republican, here is what I have discovered: there is a difference between conservative and right wing. Barry Goldwater was a conservative...Limbaugh and company are right wing. Conservatives genuinely believe in minimizing the intrusion of government in the private lives of the citizens. Right wingers want the intervention--they just want it on their side.

If they were heroes, they would have forced the whole thing to be canned and started from scratch...with a clear warning to Obama NOT to outsource the design of the package to Pelosi and Reid.

Even at $100 billion less, the thing is an abomination.

Sorry if you think that makes me "too right wing".

Is "right wing" a derogatory term?

If right wing means not wanting congress to throw away $600 billion just because $300 billion will go to stimulate the economy then so be it.

Things are bad. But don't panic because that gives those who want to take advantage of you a leg up. Those being the left wing nuts.

Potter's not selling. Potter is buying!

Nah! Americans don't care about the "little porky amendments" in the bill.

Chuck Schumer said that...so it MUST be true.

Both parties have lost any semblance of credibility they may once have had about this stimulus bill. The bulk of the Republicans only began to care about deficits sometime between Election Day and Inauguration Day, and Obama's sellout to Reid and Pelosi for their pet projects shows his lack of real effort towards fighting the recession.

It's not about the economy; it's about politicking and the Republicans won the spin battle regarding the bill. The real risk they ran by stonewalling was that if economic news got worse, and Obama figured out how to effectively promote a slightly revamped version of the stimulus, they would have been villainized by the public. Remeber the Republicans' success at defeating the first version of Bush's bailout; it didn't do them much good in the long run. Now they can spend the next two years reminding people, every time that bad economic news hits the fan, how the Democrats have wasted money on the "stimulus" to no effect.

FWIW, I think that if the Gang of Three had stuck together and the Republicans had wound up filibustering, the Dems would have caved in the way Pelosi, Reid and company have caved in time after time the last two years.

Arlen Specter has always crossed party lines. Last time around, he had a primary challenge from Pat Toomey, a far more conservative Congressman. Specter won by something like 17,000 votes.

I suspected that Specter, who is now 80 and recovering from brain cancer, was going to have a challenge before the vote. Now I am sure of it.

It won't be Toomey, though, who is eyeing a run for governor.

arlen and those girls from Maine have made themselves a nice little voting bloc.arlen is very wise.

In his early days in the Senate, clear thinking pragmatic GOP Senators used to meet every two weeks over dinner to discuss legislation they wanted to push. There were 2 dozen of them. They used to meet in a room at a DC restaurant.
Now The meeting is held in Arlens office, as there are only 2 of them.

The GOP is now a suthren theological party.

conservatism has nothing to do with libertarianism any more.

Toomey has no chance of winning statewide, as his wingnuttiness has become well known.

I hear fellow wing nut Peg Luksik-she of the one issue-is also thinking about running.

PA has moved to the blue column.Actually, the philly burbs have moved the state bluer.
